    Upgrade suggestions, please!

I recently bought a new aftermarket HU (JVC KDA615) for my car. I love it and it seems like it improved the quality. Now i think i need to compliment it by getting some speakers and stuff. Working with a budget of $300 what can/should i get? I have the original audio still which is the premium package (6 speakers).

    thanks

You could probably pick up a sub and amp for 100 bucks off craigslist, then spend the rest on the best door and deck speakers you can afford.
WTB late model, anywhere on the east coast will go as far west as Texas for the right car at the right price. 5 speed 6cyl only.

How do i know which amp config works best with my car? Is it 4 channel? I could probably pick up any sub, i think they're all the same...i wouldnt want to go bigger than a 10"

I tell everyone the same thing: use a 4 channel to start with. Half on bass, half on front speakers.

Later, add a dedicated sub amp and move your 4 channel to power front/rear.

Right.... let's just add BASS and nothing else. Makes perfect sense.

Because it's only important to amp the sub right? hahaha.

All the speakers in the world isn't gonna address the lack of power adn the lack of crossovers, plus the total lack of adjustability

On a 300 dollar budget he doesn't have the money to amp all of the speakers and have a sub. Your suggestion was noted Luke, and was a good one, but he would have to have a pretty good amp to share a four channel with a sub and have any bass whatsoever. I think it would put him outside of his budget.

Also, he can afford components for the deck and doors on 200 bucks. He just can't amp them.

On top of that, many (dare I say most?) people would be satisfied with a small sub/amp and a nice set of coaxials amped by the HU.

Nope, changing out your speakers will not sound anywhere near as good as what I recommend: add a 4 channel amp and a small sub. Front and sub powered by the amp, rears powered by the head unit.

First, don't waste your money on cheap components. Unless another deal comes along like the fabled PPI speaker deal, don't waste the money on any component speaker under about $300/set, retail.

The stock PS speakers are better. Especially in high pass, especially with some decent power. Having pulled out Polk or Infinity to replace them with decent condition stock speakers tells me I am right, and I have done it several times.

If you had heard what I build using stock premium sound speakers and a sub, powered by a small $150 4 channel, you might understand what I am talking about. The SQ in my wifes car, or JParkrs car is awesome for being $300 systems.

Of course, with my boxes being so much more efficient than any other design, that is a huge part of it, you just don't need much power to run them well. you can still get some decent bass and be able to use high pass filters on the fronts, plus bring your stage forward by 75%, like it is supposed to be.

oh, and next time, spend that extra $50 and get the deck with high pass filters.

What 4 channel amp do you recommend? Do you have anymore subs available? I agree that my current PS speakers are pretty good...but i def am not satisfied with my lows/bass.

thanks for the input. Im pretty excited about this little project

I have found that 90% of the amps ina given price range are all just about the same...I mean this in all seriousness...pull the covers off, it is the same circuit board!

I use Titanium Power because they are kind of exclusive, plus the look is nice. I don't have any in stock, but I have done several buys over the last couple years.

Find a couple amps on the web somewhere...I know someone who picked up a nice Discus series MB Quart amp (which is the same as the TP amps I sell) for $100.

Keep in mind wattage is meaningless, so anywhere from 25 watts per channel to 75 watts per channel is fine. What you care about is adjustable crossovers!

Oh...another sub box build will be a while from now. I have no place to work, nowhere to set up my table saw. Last build was 23 boxes. I nearly filled a 55 gallon trash can with sawdust!
