I "pleasured myself" and bought a 31 band digital equalizer from Behringer. Pretty cheap ($200) but does the job right. The reason for buying the EQ is that my basement has a concrete floor and single layered Giproc walls and ceiling. A real acoustic nightmare. I will soon buy one of their digital active crossovers to tri-amp my other set of custom Kef 105/2. I have a couple more Quad power amps (405s and 606s).

Even if the Kef 105-2 are known for their bass, the basement is not too friendly. it is absorbing a lot of it. I would hear only some of the bass in the basement, while the floor/ceiling would be vibrating like crazy...

Are you planning on adding some 'sound and acoustic' baffles throughout the Man-Basement?

            Lee,

Propable a stupid response but have you tried speaker distance off the wall and apart. You could be getting some cancellation.

I have indeed tried moving speakers away from walls, back and forth for the past 10 months. And as far as spending $10k to redo the basement, it is out of the question... ;-) EQ works great. I am happy.

I have five sets of speakers. They all sound awfull in the basement, and great in the living room or bedroom.

                Nice. :)
                My 'college-apartment-friendly' system consists of:

                - Denon receiver (only 3-4 years old, got it for $200 from a friend who was an audiophile at my last job, it retailed for near $1200) The thing is a hoss and sounds great to boot
                - Old skool Yamaha 150 watt amp
                - 2 3-way component Fischer towers with 15'' subs/5.5'' mids(i think)
                - Bose Acustimass series 2 satellite speakers with inline sub
                - B&W 6'' components

Honestly - for a college apartment, I have yet to see more than 1 or 2 systems that top it, its sorta my crown jewel... haha

That's certainly a nice stack o' gear! What model of turntable is that?

I finally got a set of speakers for my rig a few months ago. I've got a Harman/Kardon T403/A402 combo that I'm listening to a pair of JBL L166s with. I've absolutely no complaints on the sound but then I don't have anything else to compare it to. Now I'm looking for a turntable since I've found that several of my favorite bands have their stuff on vinyl.

Good that the Behringer EQ is working for you. I've used some of their "Pro-Audio" stuff in the past doing live sound and was less than impressed. But if it works, it works!

TT is a 1972 Technics SL1100ac, the mother of all DJ turntables, the all mighty SL1200mk2 (don't touch the mk1, it is a "missing link"). The SL1100 is a collector TT, but if you are looking for an indestructible work horse that won'y loose resale value, get an SL1200. wether they are 3 or 30 years old, they will remain just as strong.

An SL1200 - This model hasn't stopped selling big since 1974. That tells a lot about the product.

I bought a SL1200-Mk2 about two years ago off of ebay for around $250 and there were no pictures in the ad-which I am sure helped me get it for the price I did. It was described in the ad as mint, and sure enough when it arrived it was in absolutely brand new condition. Originally purchased in 1987 and included the box and original receipt of purchase. Anyone interested in getting a very nice and almost indestructible turntable should definitely look into one of these.
