    6.5" door pods are in.

Well nobody wanted to buy these so I went ahead and put them in my car until I build my new ones. The speakers are Elemental Designs e6.5's. The crossovers are housed inside the map pocket and the tweeter is where tweeters go on these cars. Sounds way better than stock, even with the crappy 600watt Lanzar amp I'm using. Please humor my narcissism and let me know what you think :p

Congrats. Those look good. Did you cut the door, or do these sit on top of the panel?

I cut a hole in the panel to give them some extra breathing room

Luuuuke. Tell us oh gifted one....

              If a dude...

was to attempt one of these along the same lines, design wise, but instead wanted to keep the door panel intact...

Do you think an enclosure of that size has enough volume to be ported? Say, with the port exiting rearward under the armrest?

Just seems as if it has at least asmuch volume as the kick panel, with better location.

I'm assuming the thing would be molded in 1/2" fiberglass with the pods angled up and out enough to clear the magnets.

              Or am I just ig'nant...

Luke - have you heard the elemental design speakers? What you think?

typical chinese made crap: I love them. They are fairly cheap (although the guys at ED are making a KILLING on them!)

I have a set of KEF KAR 160 woofers: about $400ish retail back in the '90s, Made in England, superb quality, amazing SQ, great in every way, right?

Those EDs are likely about 95% as good for 1/3rd the money.

Ported boxes need to be roughly double sealed...so NFW on ported, and even sealed is squeezing it, and then again NFW on a 6.5", maybe MAYBE get a 5.25" to perform adequately in a sealed space...and even then it is gonna need an assload of power to actually work.

So think of it like this: that airspace, counting on 1/4" wall thickness at a minimum (and how strong is that gonna be?) that might be about .8 liters, maybe a full liter at best, right?

That means a 4" if you want any bass below 150Hz...in a SEALED space.

that 6.5' there should play pretty damn loud, like 120db or so if highpassed even at 80Hz, 12db/oct...but that is assuming it is able to see the airspace in the door as its resonant cavity.

Think of it like this: you have a 6.5" driver sitting on your bench. It has a natural resonance at about what, 40Hz, 45Hz? If you shove it in a box, ANY box, it will naturally raise its resonant point, and the smaller the box, the higher it raises it...so if you put in in a fairly large space, like a door panel, it will only raise it to like 50Hz or 60Hz, where if you tried to shove it in that tiny space there, we are now talking about that resonant space pushing the total resonance up to like 150hz.

Now, here is the botch with that: for the most part, any speaker out there will be basically uncontrolled below its natural resonant frequency.

That is why you can yank a 10" woofer out of a correct box, cut out the hole larger and drop a 12" in and LOSE bass...make sense?

Even thinking about sealing that (or just about any other) 6.5" in that small of a space means no bottom end at all; that is the #1 reason our cars have such shit bass.

Of course, I have a scheme or three in mind.

If I had, say, a guy who spoke fluent Chinese and maybe had some contacts in China, maybe already had an import company...maybe...I might be persuaded to go in on a deal making a small pod that would actually do something as either a mini sub or just a mid and would fit, play loud, look good, all of that jazz...or maybe even a 2nd set for the rear speaker replacement on a cabriolet...
