E30 Audio Overhaul - My Project Details

I'm looking into a neat audio setup for when I finish my touring. This has me thinking maybe I should steer away from car audio (I'm on a budget) even if I haven't a clue about what's going on in here  I might start a thread here later as there's good knowledge on here.Leave a comment:

Haha, thanks. I don't think it is a case of that so much as being lucky to have access to lots of tools, though (and free time). NOT owning a TV frees up a ridiculous amount of time, even when working full-time!Leave a comment:

Hmm, sorry about the super late response.
I had some scraps of 20ga steel sheetmetal laying around. I snipped off some pieces, bent them & JB-Weld'ed them onto the HVAC panel at the right depth to get the CD43 flush & straight. You need to make darn sure that all oils & stuff are off of the HVAC panel plastic, and maybe rough it up with some 100 grit sandpaper to get a reasonable bond (do the same for the metal too). I also locked a nut onto the threaded post on the back of the head unit (to provide a "catch" for a zip tie) and then reached through the glove box to zip tie the post to the metal bracket back there. So far so good!Leave a comment:

True Luke. Shit what amps, besides Mcintosh, haven't been outsourced?Leave a comment:

Oh I agree. Im doing a box for a friend, and I got my eyes on that Dayton Titanic 10".
It looks astonishing for the price, specs good tooLeave a comment:

It depends greatly on the driver being used. Most car subs are designed for use in compact enclosures & suck hard otherwise. I didn't use any "car" drivers, anywhere in the car for that reason. A little know-how buys a lot of options.Leave a comment:

Ill have to read up on this. I always thought open air was just crap sounding. Not tight and punch at allLeave a comment:

I'd consider it more of a front-loaded baffle arrangement. The front of the sub is enclosed behind the arm rest, which is basically a super leaky damped box. The trunk is large enough, and vented into the cabin well enough that it basically all acts as one airspace.
Open-baffle arrangements have been used with great success in many home audio setups. This isn't quite one of those since one side is blocked (unless I put the arm rest down...but I can't hear a difference when I do). Either way, it is a perfectly "normal" driver configuration.Leave a comment:
