    Infinity Reference up front?

So I realized the stock front speakers are not going to cut it for the new build so am in the market for a decent set of components. I know this topic has been covered a bunch but i failed at searching it. I want to keep it under $200 and want an easy install. Direct fit in the kick panel and an semi easy mount in the tweeter pod would be desirable. I liked the coax infinities that my friend had in his ranger way back in the day. Also their components are 2 ohm which would get more out of my amp. Has anyone tried the fit of these? I'm open to all opinions.

    Thanks,
    Mike B.

There are plenty of speakers out there that are better than infinity reference, but when you conside that you have to stick with stock size and not too DEEP... I can't even recommend CDT or IDQ line. I would probably even pick polk db line over the reference imho.

Best thing would be to go out and listen to as many different speakers as possible....speakers are kind of like shoes....

I have infinity reference 5.25 components in my car. The fit for the woofer is pretty tight on the driver's side with all the wiring for the central lock and shit but it goes in. Having the stock premium sound with remote tweeters I just hacked out the old screen and tweeter coil and continued to chew out material from the hole with an exacto knife until the new tweeters popped into place, they sit right against the side of the dash with the doors closed but they do fit.

Sound wise I am very disappointed. I don't know if it is because I am using just my headunit (Alpine 9853) and no external amp but the woofers are barely doing anything, there is barely any sound at all coming from them. The tweeters blare lots of high end which I don't think is exactly a good thing either. That said the deck is pretty basic with no fade control and a really shitty EQ setup so with a proper equalizer control you would have better control of the sound you're getting.

Keep your OEM 5.25s if they are in Premiums and are in good shape, pick up some nice soft dome 1" tweeters from partsexpress or madisound and call it a day. Oh, you would need some crossovers too. Watch your impedance! I'd pick up a small amp too. A bucket of stuff on your craigslist.

My Premiums ARE in nice shape it seems but the lack of crossover has me confused. I do have an amp (alpine MRP-F300) that I will be using for front and probably rears too, which is why a 2ohm setup would be nice. That said, what do you suggest for crossovers? I have NO experience here...

            No ideas for crossovers?

If you have premium fronts they have a simple crossover on the mid....and instead of spending money on "universal" crossover you can use the amps or headunit's highpass crossover....

Passive Crossovers (active are another story) aren't a "one size fits all" type of deal, to get the best out of them they are designed individually for each mid/tweeter combination.

Aahhaa thanks... That makes sense. I will probably set my amps high pass to about 80hz but could you explain how to hook up the mid, tweet and crossover that are in the back of premium sound speakers? I see the two posts that probably go to the mid driver, then the other two posts on the other side of the driver (the ones with the electronics wired to them) just connect to the tweeter?

YES SIR! there is a red crossover(actually just a bass blocker of some sort) so yes, just...plug and play. :)

the coil is the low pass 1st order (6db/octave) and the cap is the 1st order highpass. it's the most simple of all crossovers basically. 2nd order would be a coil and cap for the woofer and cap with coil for tweeter. unless you like to play at the highest volume 1st order is fine....2nd/3rd/4th have more component count and have a steeper roll off...meaning they block off lower freq. from the mid at a higher / steeper rate and bass from the tweeter at the higher/steeper rate = you can play louder (up to a point) w/o the tweeter or mid distorting.

                    example with pictures

Mike, apparently the "new" MBQuart speakers are gonna go back to the old style, the ones that actually FIT our cars. I am supposed to have a set in my hands soon...can you wait a while?

Another thing is IF you are gonna do a sub, just use all of the wiring at the stock amp. You already have all 4 corners of speakers there, and using super high quality wire, too.

You would be amazed how the stock speakers perform at 120Hz high-pass. They play VERY nicely with decent power behind them.

Think about this: a $200 5 channel amp, a $80 woofer and 3 sets of RCAs...you build your own box or wait until I do more, or just use a generic piece of crap sub box...you can have STUNNING sound for under $500 and keep 90% of your trunk, too.

One of my biggest complaints is the References surround, how it bulges WAY past the frame. Infinity claims this allows a larger cone, I say it makes it hard to squeeze it under a stock BMW grille.

Did you do anything to make sure it has room to move? Did you run new wire or use the BMW wire? I have done a couple of sets of Refs in E30s, IMO, they actually have one of the "fattest" (warm and bassy, but not bloated) sounds out there...not as warm as the stock setup, but nothing I have found is as good as the stock PS speakers in midbass. I can't even tell you how many times I have pulled out Polks or Infinities or whatever and put the stockers back in.

No sub, use stock. With sub, do what you want.

OK, so I checked the price the rep gave me, $198/set.

Sonix got them for $150/set: http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_...t+PVI+213.html

Quart only has 1 kind of component with 5.25 woofer, so this is the one.

PowerBass has something I wanna look at, but those Quarts do NOT make midbass. I did not get to hear them yet, but the Fs is like 74Hz or some shit.

That price for something as clean as those you guys might wanna consider.
