Another loser looking for input for audio

Finally getting around to doing audio in my E30 and would like some input/review for components. My main questions lie around the rear speakers - I currently have factory premium sound , and I'm not sure what to replace those speakers with. Also of note, I currently have a Kenwood KDC-MP638 head unit and factory amp delete.

My buddy is trying hard to sell me on a pretty much complete Infinity Reference setup, and I don't know if I'm getting good components with them or not. Anyway, onto the list:

    Subwoofer enclosure: StereoInstaller1's 10" box
    Subwoofer: Infinity 1060W
    Rear Speakers: Infinity 5032CF
    Front Speakers (+tweeter/crossover): Infinity 5030CS
    Amplifier: Infinity 5350A
Headunit: Kenwood KDC-X994 (this is already on its way to me as a factory refurb via Crutchfield)
Amplifier Kit: Absolute KIT-4 4 Gauge Amplifier Kit

Does this sound like a decent setup? I'm not looking to spend mega bucks on this, just get a really good, clean sounding setup. Obviously I'll need speaker wire as well, inputs on that?

    Thanks in advance to all.

You will piss off anyone who has dropped thousands on a big system.

Consider the PPI 5 channel at Sonicelectronix too, but if you do, get the DVC version of that same woofer. That will give you an honest 250 RMS on bass (2 ohm load), and about the same level of clarity, but more overall power and better crossovers.

That PPI was like $599ish retail, it is on closeout for $200 shipped.

Consider getting a dash mounted sub level control too. PAC makes one, you have enough gain you can do a cheap passive one too, but JL makes a boosted sub level controller that will sound better anyway. I think it retails about $50ish.

It sucks having to go through menus to get to the sub level control. Knobs are good.

Properly installed, your car will embarrass LOTS of bigger installs. This is fun!

Luke, thanks for the input - it's very much appreciated.

As far as the sub level controller, will I really need one? I'm leaning toward tweaking everything when I do my install and going for a set-it-and-forget-it setup.

Also, something I didn't consider but might need - a capacitor. A friend of mine with an E46 is convinced that we both need one for our setups, but his is a bit more involved and he obviously has more electrical draw from his car. Do I really need one, and if so, any recommendations? I'm thinking just a simple 1-farad cap will cover my bases.

The sub level is gonna be needed only if you listen to a wide range of musics.

I echo everything Luke said... period. I have been VERY impressed with the references and they are stupid cheap.

The remote bass knob is only needed if you are like Luke and don't like using a menu system. I always use my head unit's bass control through the menus just to avoid installing a know... it's preference.

But changing the bass volume is CRUCIAL if you listen to a wide variety of music... there is no perfect setting for it... unfortunately.

I have that PPI amp. I don't miss the sub controller since my Alpine HU can adjust the sub level by simply pushing the volume knob once. For 200 bucks it can't be beat. A few guys at Cars and Coffee Cleveland today listened to it and I guess were impressed (or just polite).

Thanks for the input guys - especially 5Toes, I ended up getting my amp from that ebay vendor for stupid cheap! Really looking forward to getting my Luke Box here in the next month or so, I already installed my new HU (looks pretty awesome compared to my last one, and sounds great).

Here's the amp I ended up getting:

It's a refurbished Infinity Kappa Five (I'm okay with refurbished, to me it's like buying used with a warranty)- I wasn't going to spend the extra money for it, but like I said, I got it for stupid cheap ($227 shipped).

Will be getting the speakers in the next month or so and hope to start my audio project as soon as I have cash for a shit-ton of Damplifier.
