I just bought a 1985 325e and the battery was disconnected when delivered. I have no idea how the battery is connected. Is the positive terminal on the battery supposed to be grounded?!?? And therefore the negative terminal would be connected to the positive lead from the car? Or is it like newer cars with positive to positive and negative to negative? PLEASE HELP!

oh dear god...and this is your first post.
OK, bubba, clearly you are used to Domestic cars.
Here is the saying you have been looking for: "Brown is Ground the world around, except in America where the cars suck ass" or something like that.
So the short fat brown wire bolted to the body is the ground.
Good luck, and welcome to R3V.

Hahhaha I know I feel like a dumbass for asking this...Just so we're clear, the ground wire attaches to the negative terminal on the battery? Correct?
I just had a friend tell me yesterday that in older cars, there is a reverse connection and the positive lead is grounded. He drives a G35.The BMW Bible: http://www.realoem.com

"Positive earth" finally died about 1965, but was rare in German cars. That would be mostly English...and if doofus in the Datsun thinks BMWs are English, get the fuck away from him, you might get infected.

Forgive Luke - he likes to answer your question with out ever answering it.
Yes, the negative terminal goes to ground. Then you install the batter, they positive terminal should be towards the front of the car, and vise-versa.Originally posted by Matt-Bhey does anyone know anyone who gets upset and makes electronics?
