    head unit and amp suggestion

Most of my stereo was stolen last year and I'm finally getting around to redoing everything. I have my 3 ways up front still that are a combination of CDT speakers and Focal 6.5's. I'm planning on going back to a 2 way setup in the front and just getting some rear speakers that will provide a bit of bass. I had a luke box and it was great but I have other priorities so I'm going to go another route at the moment. I just could never get the 3 way system to sound the way I wanted.

I need another head unit and an amp to power the system. I'd like to get something that would be capapble of powering a sub in the instance that I just have to have one again. I'm trying to stay relatively light weight.

I do have a PPI amp but I think I'd probably need another or something bigger I can't remember the specs.

Bang for the buck deck is the JVC KD-R900.

Amazing SQ, great features, BT, USB, blah blah BURR BROWN DACs!

You know that reminds me. I've always wondered if these decks that are basically a CD player with ipod capability added, if they run all the digital signal through the Burr Brown circuit. I've wondered if the Burr Brown is more a part of the CD, and the ipod is simply a re-amplified compressed digital signal.

Since the USB accesses the iPod connectivity through mass storage, in this decks case it does use an internal DAC. It may have 2 sets, I have NFC.

Last one I installed, I used my flash drive to listen to some music (screw iPods, thumb drives rock and are FAST!) and it was far superior to my Pioneer DEH-P5000 in detail and dynamics...so I am gonna guess that it does.

Hmmm...my birthday is this saturday, maybe I should get one!

OK, remember I dont do this for a living. The DEH P5000 is the same as the Premier by Pioneer, and they both have Brown Butt DAC so the CD sounds better. I have been unimpressed by the Premier playing ipod through the $50 cable, so you may be on to something.

No, the Pioneer/Premier use some cheap-o DAC, not Burr-Brown

Jay, grab a thumb drive and drop some of your files on it, then rip the same CD using Windows Media set to 192K and drop it on the thumb drive.

And WTF, we gonna trade some shit? I had no idea you actually had ears!

I guess I'm sold it won't look much different than my old alpine unit. Nice idea with the thumb drive.

Ordered one today. Looks like it does everything and for a nice price. I have a PPI amp to run my front components, but no crossovers.

Any ideas on crossover point for the 6.5's and the tweeters.

I have focal polyglass 6.5's and CDT tw-26 (I think) tweeters. I am going to pull the 4's from the doors because I can't seem to get it to sound the way I want

I always set the mids to around 120hz in e30's. In e46's with custom mounting to the door itself and sealing I go lower... but you'll never get that kind of airspace/seal out of the e30.

                        As for the tweets... *shrug*
