Pretty cool actually but with that tiny screen and porsches radio location makes this a tough sell. Kinda steep on price though. Ill stick with garmin.

The more relveant bit is that it's a retro styled single DIN head unit. If the Porsche silk screening can be removed easily, it'd be a decent choice in, say, an E30.

That is nothing short of bad ass. Let us hope BMW does more of the same, only cooler.

The only problem I see with this is that Im guessing the average going price for those cars is around 25k where its commonplace to find e30's for around .5k. e30 m3s excluded.

I'd love to replace the Alpine in my 911 with this...but first I'd need to see the display. Just about every aftermarket HU I've seen suffers HIDEOUS glare (even ones claiming to be glare-free) thanks to the air cooled P-Car location, with only my most recent purchase (Alpine HU w/ BioLite display) visible to the driver in all light conditions (the original radios had a backlight LCD screen ala e30 OBC and were perfectly visible).

That's what it comes down to for me. If its readable, it WILL be mine.

Frankly, even Porsche's price isn't too ridiculously far off the mark. The only other single-DIN nav setup that I know of is from JVC, and that isn't cheap. Knock 20% off the MSRP (which is obtainable), and it *almost* looks reasonable. And it's genuinely reasonable if the Porsche list price includes VAT.

All of this, of course, assumes that the damned thing actually works. If there is one thing that the Germans seem to have a good understanding of, it's overly complex and borderline unusable nav interfaces.

Hopefully Porsche didn't over-engineer this thing - it doesn't need a POI search, it doesn't need XM satellite traffic or some crazy shit, just simple, EFFECTIVE navigational software. Give me a spot to enter my destination, choose a few simple options (avoid highways, tolls, etc.) and get to driving (and not in circles, either)

Plus, certainly Porsche knows that screwing with an overly complicated interface in an air-cooled 911 WILL result in serious bodily harm. Its a lean over, head-below-dashboard affair just hitting the Seek button!

Believe me, I'm familiar with that. I never understood why they didn't improve the ergonomics of that just a little bit. It's not like they couldn't. They just couldn't be bothered, apparently.

The apparently discontinued NX5000 and NX505. Still available from sketchy sources for about $700
