Tri-Amped 5.1 in a car? You bet.

This is a big stupid project I have been working on. This is just a tiny bit of the whole thing. This is the passive crossovers for the front and rear speakers. There are multiple channels of power with separate crossovers before the amps as well. The power cable for this install is more than most people spend on their speakers...

The floor, before:



4 Passive crossovers, tri-amped, and Bi-Wired:



3 amps (100RMS X 4 @ 4 ohms on mids and tweets front and rear, 1200 WRMS on a single 12" prototype woofer)

I have well over 200 hours into this car so far. EVERYTHING has been a total pain in the ass, from making sure the jack can be removed from under the crossover rack to custom built RCAs, and masses of them!

The 2XS is for the center channel and its amp only...wanna talk about overkill?



and the Center...yes, that is a stock BMW tweeter, and half of that little clarion (about 100 RMS) bridged runs it! Of course, the other half runs the 2 3" Tang Band midrange drivers


It will have a grille, of course. I will post more pics of the door speakers, door panels, the pair of 8" woofers under the rear seats and of course the CarPC as soon as I feel like taking pics.

Actually, I really wish I had taken pics of this box. The floor of the E28 is not flat, it has a big (4" D X 6" H) metal "step" on the front wall of the trunk. That box is taller than the opening of the trunk, and the step in the front of the angled part of the box was damn near impossible to build...but that damn 85 pound box has to be wedged and slid into place. Fortunately, I was also able to keep the shock mounting bolts accessible, hopefully that box will never need to come out!

Very nice Luke. I've never understood 5.1 with a car's interior as a listening area, but I'm sure it will sound awesome with you doing the work.

You should couple it with a car pc or something so it has unlimited media capabilities.

It is carPC: Zotec Atom in a Voom2 on Centrafuse.

Sound card is a Creative XFi 5.1...miserable pile of shit that is.

Tuan has a new motherboard with a dual core Atom and a Griffin Powermate we are going to replace the retarded Creative XFi USB pile of shit with...maybe then we can finish the dashboard and it can LEAVE!

Gotcha... I was thinking of running a very similar setup in the distant future, now I am even more interested in this build.
