    e30 M3 help

recently purchased an e30 M3 and want to keep the speakers stock. it appears to have tweeters in the front doors and a woofer/tweeter in the rear deck. Anyone know the sizes for this car and drop in replacements that will work for this car? It needs a new head unit that can play my MP3. Is there any restriction as far as size goes with regard to the headunit? I know that the sound emitted by the S14 is better than any musical instrument but I still need my tunes. thanks ahead of time.

Actually, your M3 also came with a tiny little amp, back in the trunk on the left side under the trunk liner, just in front of where a non-M has the antenna.

Changing the deck is easy stuff as long as you are OK cutting wires in the dash.

Does your car have the fader above the deck? If it does, does it light up with the dash lights?

    Closing SOON!

thanks yes it does have a fader built in the head unit. there appears to be 2 small tweeter speakers in the doors and the rear deck has a pair of 2 way speakers that do not go through the rear deck.
I have been looking at the Nak cd 500 as a head unit and like I said I would like to replace the speakers but stay OEM look. Do you happen to know which speakers will fit in these spots and which one you have used in the past? The interior is in excellent condition and I want to keep that way. Any advice is very much appreciated.

Tweeters will take some modification to mount - nobody uses that factory 2 ear mounting on the rear pods, and the fronts are glued into the plastic housing.

Consensus is the factory premiums are pretty decent - might want to try just switching out the deck first.

Oh, and nothing that fits in in the factory locations makes bass. So if that is the driver for changing speakers... forget it. Keep the factory speakers.

Stereoinstaller makes a box that fits behind the rear seat, takes minimum trunk space (some folks don't even notice it in mine) and pounds bass into the cabin, not the trunk. It is custom designed for the e30 and fits like it was made in the fatherland. Even comes with a template for a cover panel to disappear it in the trunk, and the matching carpet. Amp sub and box will probably run $350 or so, but it is soooo worth it.

Read any of the 10 most recent threads on this sub-forum and half are going to talk about this box.

and I say again, do NOT change out decent condition stock speakers: you will not do better unless you spend cubic dollars.

many thanks all. More info on this site than I have found anywhere else....thx again.
I will have to change out the head unit though. I can not stand another drive listening to talk radio.

You have the best audio in the world, 16V's of S14 singing away at each shift. My Zinno doesn't even have a stereo anymore.

I totally agree but I have to say that listening to my stromung in my e36 with the tunes in the back ground is excellent music together and my intesion is to do the same in the e30 ;)

Mod your deck to take Ipod. There is a thread here somewhere.

I did it to my stock deck in my M3 and it works great.
