    Front mid-range speakers dead?

    Hey all,

Here is a synopsis of my problem: Hooked up a new head unit to a premium sound system. Rears work, front tweeters work. Mid-ranges in the kick panels do not.

So the PO left me with a 87 325is that was wired up for an aftermarket head unit but sold it to me without a head unit. So I install a new JVC. I find that he did the common method of running new wires back to the amp and tying in with the direct feeds to the speakers (bypassing the amp). I am getting sound out of every speaker except the ones in the kick panels. I've played with the fade, and balance. Checked the wiring with the wiring diagrams. Everything is where it should be. Checked connections, they're good. Checked the solder on the tabs on the speakers, and it's in good shape. Visually the speakers look physically fine. I tried disconnecting the tweeter from the capacitor, and it just shuts off the tweeter. So I tried hard wiring the speakers to a rear speaker feed, no sound. I got out the multimeter and touched the leads to the positive and negative tabs and there appears to be no continuity between them.

So does this mean they are dead? I find it odd that both the left and right speakers would suffer the same fate. Is it possible the PO had the polarity reversed and killed them that way? Thanks for any input.

Tom, how many wires were attached to the front midrange?

Three, also the colors correctly matched the wiring diagram (I'm following the '87 Electrical Trouble Shooting Manual).

        Your mid is blown.

That's what I suspected but wasn't sure since I've never seen the same two speakers on each side of the cabin completely blown to the point of no sound. As one of my coworkers pointed out, someone must have had their Rammstein CD cranked too hard. :-)

          Thanks for your help!
