some kind of bypass happening... quick question

I'm installing a new headunit. Just came across this PO 'modification'. can anyone tell me what is going on here? It looks like the stock wiring has been looped back into itself, should I cut this whole connector out and wire the speakers up individually, or was this done with some kind of purpose?
thanks in advance, any help or comments are appreciated.

ps- i've got the equipment to solder

    No, that is factory.

What year/model, and assuming what I see there is correct, you have a late model with no fader on the dash.

correct, and my apologies for not mentioning that. Yes, it's a 91 325iC. the purple(aftermarket RR+) is wired into blue/black, and the yellow(aftermarket LR+) is wired into yellow/black. this is correct according to your writeup.

here's what else though- all the neg(-) speaker wires coming off the old aftermarket plug weren't connected to anything. the other two positive speaker wires RF+ & LF+ were wired to blue and yellow dash wires(known to be stock) which were twisted with brown wires(which were connected to the aftermarket ground), is this correct also?

Yes it is. One of the few installers who knows how to properly integrate a E30 amp!

        Personally, I would bypass it.
