i got in my car last night and all of my cluster was down right when i cranked it except for my speedometer. got in my car today to try it again and at first they made movement but then died off in seconds. so do i need to replace the cluster or is it an electrical problem(i have no idea what to do i'm completely lost). Last the previous owner said that when he turned the fog lights on he smelt smoke coming from behind the cluster. some help would be great.:o

I just went out and wiggled fuse 21, but that did not do anything. I did the same to fuse 10, which also did not do anything to the dial problem, but after I replaced fuse 10 (7.5 amp) now my dials work as advertised! Everything is back to normal.
So I would try replacing the fuses before you go out and buy a new cluster set. Hope that helps!

Does it pop when you engage reverse? Fuse 10 also handles the reverse lights and if the reverse cable under the gear boot is rubbing, it might be shorting against the chassis there.
On my car, Fuse 10 also handles the aux fan and mine was stuck. That caused it to blow until I replaced the fan.

Where specifically does that reverse cable run?
On a related note the odo does not work but the speedometer does. Is the gauge shot? I am new to the E30 so I am sorting through this.
Well fuse #10 still pops. I avoided reverse to see what would happen and everything stayed working for about 5 miles and then the fuse let go. I have to figure this out.Last edited by thedaddy; 03-19-2011, 09:49 PM.

My reverse light problem was intermittent as well. The problem was under the shift boot where the wire goes underneath the floor pan and into the trans tunnel. the insulation was cut through there, and it was shorting to the body of the car. Once I solved that issue, I found that my reverse lights were always on, as the cable was no longer shorted to the body, but rather it was shorted to itself (both wires were touching). A quick look under my car revealed this: http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/showthread.php?t=202111
Hope that helps someone out there!

I will give that a look.
I am still popping fuses. I pulled the cluster because I need a new one as one of the brackets was broken and the odo did not work, but I need to find the source of the fuse issue because that fuse controls my fan and when it gets warm I have to have some A/C down here.

Mine quit blowing fuses. I wish I had a solid answer to share, but I was at the shop and I put a new fuse in and Scott started moving the wires behind the cluster around and it immediately blew. He rearranged the wires and I put the new fuse in and it has not blown for a few weeks.
Of course there is a short somewhere in there, but I have not found it yet.
