New CD player installed, but it sounds like crap

I installed a blaupunkt cd34 couple weeks ago. The car is a 90 325 with the premium sound (i assume, since I found an amp in the trunk).

The original radio sounded quite good, except for the occasional constant whine, which I couldn't stand... So, after I installed the blaupunkt, the sound is really crappy. Hardly any bass, anything over 55 distorts, so I can't even turn it up.

Whenever I turn it on, the amp makes a nasty hissing/staticky/whiny sound for about a second until the sound actually kicks in. Same sound it makes when I mute it/turn the volume all the way down. This sound is similar to the constant whine the original system made on saturdays (coincidentally, it happened few saturdays in a row, i don't think it has anything to do with the day of week).. the whine isn't changing with rpm, just constant.

The wiring was pretty straight forward... I wired the common ground to the radio case, just like it was done on the original system.. power, and the remote wire, antenna, pretty straight forward. My girlfriend's 89 has the exact same hu, sounds just as crappy, has all new wiring, "afordable" new speakers, but no amp.

Any input? something I wired wrong, or a bad amp? What do you guys think? Also, worth mentioning I had a bad/shorted ground wire that was causing some wired problems... the right passenger corner light would go out; fuse kept blowing when the radio was on... then, the fuse was ok, but radio wouldn't work. After replacing the ground wire everythings seems fine. Thanks a lot.

Rewire every speaker to the headunit's outputs, then throw the factory amp off the nearest cliff.

    Seriously, that's the problem.

That's what I did to my girlfriend's car. Doesn't sound any better, tho. I think that blaupunkt is a piece of crap. The speaker's, too. All I want is a decent sounding system without spending an arm and a leg.

The factory premium components are actually quite good, it's surprising. I don't know just how bad that headunit is, but I know that they do sound reasonably good with just a headunit powering them.
