Build Log: Bubbas 87 325 sedan

    I am starting my build.

The previous owner had an aftermarket JVC head-unit install. Whoever installed the unit sliced the factory harness out. They also had the front and rear speakers running off the front channel of the factory amp (rear channel must not work).

So I decided to run all new wires for everything. So I ran front and rear, right and left lines from the new harness to the stock speaker locations. While I was at it I also ran new lines for when I put an amp on the front speakers. I ran three sets of RCA’s from the HU to the rear as well as a remote line.

The previous owner had the power antenna removed (I assume he was going to replace it). Well I am too cheap to buy a factory power antenna, so I bought a new stationary antenna (not pretty, but it will work). I could not find a connector to use the factory antenna wire; so I ran a new antenna wire.

Wires getting bundled and color coded:

Alpine CDA-126BT... Nothing special, but has what I needed. RCA outs (F,R), iPod, & Bluetooth. I will probably end up changing it to a more SQ player someday.

Head-unit. You can see where my iPod cable comes out below A/C Heat controls:

I am thinking about building door pod for my mid bass. I really don't like the location.

I am thinking about building some pods here.

Good lord, man, that antenna is hideous.

Progress is nice though, huh? How about some full car pics?

The antenna is only temporary till I find a way to mount a different one.

Seems to me you have the skills to find a few proper factory antennas and make 1 good one out of them.

The problem is I have never found a power (up and down) antenna that will last.

But I just found a parts car I plan to buy... So I might be having a stock one soon!

I plan to find a nice set of coaxial speaker in the kick panel (look to throw around 75-100 rms). Eventually so door pods.

As of my subs.... I would love to do a IB type install using the rear spearker shelf as my baffle. I have never done a IB before.

My reason for wanting go infinite baffle. Space in the rear trunk and it looks cool. Thinking to tens. I am hoping to find some old JL w3 (with dust caps).

Amps I am either going to use what I have - Rockford Fosgate punch, or PPI art series...

Amps will be going to the spare tire wheel well.

So...it sounds like you have absolutely no clue how IB works, right?

Back when these cars were new, I did mostly IB installs. Plenty of boxes too, but LOTS of IB installs on BMW and MBZ. in fact, I designed my own 8" IB woofer, had them made custom for me by Eminence in lots of 100. I went through 400 of them in a 3 year period, as I did them in groups of 4. 4 8" woofers across the back deck of a 560 SEL with a Zapco Z150 makes a fairly satisfying bass. 4 of them with a Z600 was much better.

That JL woofer just won't work. You can't use any W3. It will flop and fart, slap the voice coil against the backplate before it even comes close to adequate volume. That is one of the worst candidates for an IB install, ever. JL did make a woofer for years called the "IB" (ie: 10IB4) intended for such things. Pioneer made the best IB woofer though, aside from my custom ones. They also were specifically labeled IB, but I forget the model numbers.

The specs you are looking for are a Qts over .5, and hopefully more like .7, a Fs no lower than 30Hz, a MMs under 150gms, an XMAX (as big as you can get) over 7mm.

Make certain you have a bumped pole piece too, it is critical.

Since you have virtually no cone control, you need an amp that has a damping factor over 250 AT 20Hz. If you have an actual "Art" series, use that, it is your best chance.

Don't be too pissed off when you hear one of my boxes though. Mine will be clearer, cleaner, deeper and louder on 1/3rd the wattage (or better) and ultimately take virtually no trunk space. The design has basically taken me 20 years to perfect, and trust me, my customers are WAY pickier about sound than anyone.

Oh yeah, another bonus: mine won't make your trunk rattle. (the IB install will rattle at any volume, especially the side vents) In fact, they keep the sound in your car, so less attention from the po-po.

But what the hell, it ain't nothing but fun, right?

What did you find as a parts car?

I am thinking about ED's now. I know how to build a box I am wanting to try a IB... I have never had a car I won't care if I hack it all up. Your box won't work for me. I have a sedan; no pass through.

I hope to deaden a little bit to help with the rattle.

I'm pretty sure all e30 except the verts have a ski pass. Can't say I'm certain of it since I've only owned coupes but I'm damn near certain of it.

I can tell you for certain it does not!

ALL E30s except very early cars have the ski pass hole, this has been discussed to death.

If it has a rear battery provision in the rear (even if battery is up front) it has the ski pass hole.

Except tourings and Cabbys, they can both go to hell anyway.

                            Heh...

Pop that seat back off and you'll find a ski pass panel.
