    Turn signals don't work! Help.

I'm buying a 1990 325i today. The biggest issue I need to address is that the turn signals don't work. The seller told me they work intermittently. When I test drove it, they never came on. What are the first things I should check? I'm not too knowlegeable with car repairs like this so give me lots of details if you can!

My guess/hope is that there's just a loose connection somewhere. Where should I look?

    Thanks

Just picked up the car today. Hazard flashers don't work. When I press the hazards button, the light behind the button turns on and I hear a sort of 'click sound' but they don't come on. Also the turn signals make the same single 'click' sound right after being canceled (they only make a single click sound, not the normal repeating click sound when engaged) and they jump back to the normal position after making a turn, but they don't come on. The turn signal indicators on the instrument cluster don't light up/flash.

Any more help is appreciated! Thanks.

Mine, now daughters car does the exact same thing, there's a flasher in the steering column, and a turn signal relay, I'd check them but I'm in VA and the cars in FL, be back home in 2 weeks, LMK if you find something,

Man I'm sort of in the same boat as you. I just bought a 87 325is and only the drivers front turn signal works.

I had the same issue. I opened up the steering column, removed the hazard flash relay, cleaned all contacts (wire and relay side) and re-installed, using a ziptie to cinch the relay tight to the plug.

              No issues since.

Small world. I was born amd raised there, moved away, then came back to start a family.

Nice back roads out near the Woods.

just read thru the vert build up nice work, done the same to the IS, it was in the hands of a 16 yr old girl, she was digging it, but the tranny has but it back in the shop next to the M3, I never did a build thread or rebuild, was working long hrs and had no desire to touch a computer if I sat I would go to sleep,

been out on the twistys there only in our 03 Envoy, would love to take a small car thru there,

                            1. Hazard switch internally broken.
                            2. Relay under steering column.
                            3. Fuse in fuse box. Fuse 20? I'm 99% sure I'm wrong on the fuse number.
                            4. Worst case $140 scenario. Replace the turn signal arm assembly.
                            5. Lose bulbs?
                            6. There could be more, but I'm out of ideas at the moment. (I just ordered a new turn signal stock. Still not installed to see if it fixed my turn signal problem.)

                            Good day sir.
