New sub box from GAS: The Beast

Hey guys, this is a rough prototype of a new design.

The deal is that the HUGE woofers out there won't fit in an E30 properly. It is hard to explain, but if you have a woofer with more than about 6" of mounting depth, the angle of the front wall makes it impossible...the woofer is just too deep.

The idea of this new design is to keep all of the stuff we are known for: Superb sound quality, efficient design that makes the most of your trunk space and most of all (say it with me guys) 100% of the bass into your car, NOT into your trunk.

I fucking HATE rattles. This design prevents them.

If you are interested in having a serious subwoofer in your E30 (more cars soon!) this is the answer. The porting is not shown, as I said this is just a rough idea of what we will be doing.

Just a few pics for now:

We plan on making a special version that has a "stepped" back, so you can use 2 of the new small amps. I am planning on using Soundstream "Stealth" series. There is a 4 channel and a mono amp that will fit on either side of the woofer window.

As you can see, it is deeper than the normal 12" box, but smaller than my "vertical mount" boxes:

This tiny little Cerwin Vega is the only 10" woofer I have sitting around (it ain't that small) should give you an idea just how badass this is gonna look from the back seat...assuming you have an armrest. Either way the veiw from the trunk will be fucking awesome.

We plan on making 3 or 4 different versions, with and without trunk windows, with LEDs over the woofer, different finishes, etc. Pretty much pure custom, but you can install it yourself.

This box is obviously going to need to be fully finished. We can do that at whatever level you want. I think just a simple textured finish in satin black would be best, but full base/clear high gloss body-match paint would look pretty sweet too, right?

    Luke

Great stuff Luke. You explained it differently to me earlier though?

    Or is woofer not mounted?

None of that box is glued or stapled...it is held together by gravity...but that is how the woofer will mount.

If you are doing a burly woofer, you MUST have a armrest seat. The woofer will actually have part of the magnet inside the car.

Where are you getting yours from? I could like a smaller amp. :)

I do have acouple locals with Tis, but the box will be kinda steep...but same basic design as the E30 Touring, fully carpeted.

If you are serial, let me know.

Get ready, the model will be here tomorrow. I expect the build to be slow, but I think I am finally ready to do cabby boxes. I am looking at doing a pair of 8", something kinda burly. The goal is to actually use that space under the top as a tuned chamber...we shall see, ya?

                    Keep it coming, fellas.

I really appreciate all of the support R3V has given me. If I were to get all sappy I would even say I have been blessed being involved with this community.

Anyone wannna do a bad ass trunk setup based on one of these new designs?

I get them from a local distributor, basically wholesale only kind of place.

they are about 5% cheaper than Sonicelectronix.com. Maybe. I will be doing a pair of the Stealth in my own car shortly...I will report on them then.

I think I am going to chase down this woofer:

Premium speakers from JBL such as wireless bluetooth speakers, Android & iOS headphones, soundbars, subwoofers, home theater systems, computer speakers, & iPod/iPhone docks. Get the best sound for music, smartphones, tablets & TVs with JBL speakers.

This new "Beast" box will work for it, the stealth 600 watt class A/B amp will make about 450 watts to it and it should be super clean

I only ask as it seems line is discontinued on Sonic's website and finding other retailers with it is proving to be interesting, at least online (the most 'reliable' source I've found is Amazon and Buy.com).
