    Smart fuses

    Hey guys,

I looked around to see if there was anything posted about smart fuses and didn't see anything. Have you guys had good experiences with smart fuses - are they worth the money? I was reading someone's e30 project log and the mentioned that they swapped out all of their fuses with the LED fuses from BavAuto, but I'm not sure if it's worth spending $50 to swap out all 30 fuses.

I guess I can do it eventually and spend the money on more important things first. Thoughts?

    Thanks!

Are they just fuses that light up when they pop? Not worth it IMO, the fuse chart decal is much more useful.

If they are PTC style fuses then thats a whole different story all together. Those are sweet.

As far as I know, they are just fuses that light up when blown. I didn't know about PTC/PPTC fuses until you just mentioned it - sweet!

Going to scrap the idea of replacing all the existing ones with LED smart fuses, but will get a few in case some blow and I need to replace.

      Thanks!

The handiest part of those fuses is locating the one that blew immediately (a fuse chart does the same thing) and possibly alerting you to something that went that you wouldn't immediately realize, like a cooling fan or rear lighting.

Problem is, 6cyl E30s already monitor the lights for you, and the cooling fan would need to be commanded on (engine close to overheating) for the little fuse light to come on. You probably wouldn't be looking at your fusebox at that time. They are mighty handy on my friend's race car with the dash mounted fuse panel though.
