Bypass Amp with Stock Premium Sound HU?

Quick question (Yes, I've searched, but could have missed something):

    Car: '89 M3 (my dad's)

Can he use the stock Premium Sound HU to power the speakers directly (bypassing the amp)?

He has no aspirations for great sound (the engine does that) but he'd like it to work. Right now, only fuzz. The HU seems to be fine. My car ('89 325iX) has the same HU and we'll swap it in there to rule out the HU as the source of the issue. We think it's the amp.

Bypassing the amp isn't an issue (thanks StereoInstaller1 for your sticky on the topic).

If the HU won't run the speakers all by itself, maybe we'll put a cheap amp in there. Bypassing the amp would be cheaper though ;o)

    Cheers,
    ~Peter

I just bypassed my amp also, my guess would be no, but then again its just a guess. I would think it wouldn't have enough power, because in came amplified stock.

        I also have an amp.
I want a nice set of smoked MHW's (I know, get it line)

It can be done and you'll be OK as long as you have the stock premium speakers and the volume is kept low.

This is my thought. Anyone know the wattage of the stock stereo? Does it maybe say on a sticker somewhere on the case?

Other then possibly not having enough power, electrically it should work fine.

I had looked into it. Assuming we're talking about the so called IR stock head unit, the speaker outs are NOT preamp level.
