    put a 380 or 173 ecm / ecu in a car equiped with 525?

    173? 525? 380?
I got a 92 blau vert, I tried to charge the battery by hooking it up in reverse to the charger and I think I cooked my ecm. are there universal ecm s? is 380 and 173 a direct swap for a 525? where would I find info like this? I did a search on the foumns, found 5 posts that lead knowhere. I found out at pelican parts that if "If the DME unit is the same version of Motronic, has the same connector on the unit, and has a removable chip, then chances are it can be a good replacement for your failed unit." is this totally true? the 173, 525 and 380 are all the same motronic 1.3 version. not sure about the connector and the removeable chip. would my stock chip still be good after a reverse voltage getting to the ecm? btw by charger charges at 2 amps.

The 173 or 380 will be just fine as replacements for your original 525 ecu. There was also a 381 ecu and I'm sure a few other variations.

Even a 153 ecu would work, but would be 1.1 motronic so no diagnostic codes I believe plus swapping in a performance chip would require a different type.

Talking to a buddy, he said that the ecm from a 3 series can also work in a 5 and 6 series as long as they have the same connector, and motronic software version. not daring enought to find that out by testing

just tested a 153 today, did not work. nothing came on. my buddies 525 did work the other night so either the 153 ecu is dead or 153 is not compatable with a 92 325ic.

reason for the 153 not being a swap for the 525. read that the 153 is pre 1987 so that would be a jetronic system, 87 and on is Motronic, coorrect me if I am wrong.

That is wrong, it is still Motronic, albiet a earlier software version.

The DME has nothing to do with 99% of the items on the car's chassis, only exceptions being tachometer, econometer, OBC fuel data, and since your car is a very late model it also energizes the ABS.

I had the same problem with my 525 ecu and a friend let me barrow his 173 ecu it works fine. I've been driving with this for months and all is good.
