    Largest 10" sub for lukebox

What is the largest motor'd sub you've managed to squeeze into a standard lukebox? Would a larger motor sub have a greater issue with the bottom or back of the box?

Just from observations it seems like something with a 2.5" voice coil and < 6" depth might be the way to go. Most stuff in this range will handle < 350 watts. I'm planning on bridging an old PPI A600 @ 4 ohms to power whatever I get. I'm kind of leaning towards a used Memphis M3 10" single 4 ohm coil. I'm kind of partial to these based on the big "M" on the dustcap but also the parameters are perfect for ported.

If you want something insane, I am able to do "one off" customs. We also offer the "beast box" which could potentially fit a JBL GTi 10. That woofer is dual 6 ohm, so you could run your PPI on a 3 ohm load...just make sure it has a fan on it and SOLID current available.

If I were you, I would look for a dual 2 ohm, but most are too big to fit the depth.

Here is the issue with depth: as you can see from all the pictures of the 10'' box installed, the port tubes are as close to the woofer as possible. The port tubes are as high as possible in the box, so you really can't raise the woofer at all.

This car has had the area around the ski pass upholstered so it looks nicer with the armrest seat in, but you can see clearly that the ports are at the absolute top edge of the hole:

If you were to see the clearance of the magnet structure to the floor of the box, you would see the issue is more a matter of "woofer height" than it is actual depth. I can get a bigger woofer in by building the box deeper (obviously, it would be bigger than 1.5 cubic feet at that point), but you can't get anything like an HCCA10 or the JBL at all in an E30 when the woofer is on the face of the box.

This is why we developed the beast box.

This is an early prototype. This particular shot has the parts of the box literally just sitting in place. The ports are installed on either side of the woofer. We are trying to work out a way to get dual 4" ports...those woofers (not this POS test mule) move a TON of air:

The final version will have a plexi window, LED illumination and an integrated amp rack, but designed specifically for the Soundstream "Stealth" series amps, or other similar small amps (PDX, etc.)

      Hit me up, lets talk.

      Luke

Luke, why not port a 10 through the rear speaker deck?

You can't, the box is not deep enough. If it were deep enough, it would be too big, like 2 cubic feet....like the 12 is.

Or, make it narrower so it isn't as big...but then the ports don't fit inside the box. Trust me, I have been through dozens of design revisions trying to get the sound I want with an installation that just about anyone can do.

The goal with the 10 box is NOT the biggest, baddest bass you can get. We have other stuff to do that...the goal is small, light weight, efficient trunk use while having some damn good bass. Figure that you can get 130db at 30Hz with 400 watts, roughly. Just keep in mind that clarity is the first goal.

I just drove my E34 (the ex has it currently) for about 2 hours with a 12 in it. If you want big fat boom, do a 12. That poor car has maybe an honest 100 watts RMS on an inexpensive "Shift" series woofer from Exile. It makes actual thunder, positively silly considering the lack of power.

My next E30 setup will be a "Beast" style box, but for a 12. Currently, that means the JBL GTi12 (easily the best woofer on the planet IMO) dual 4" Aeroports and roughly 2.6 cubic feet. This should hit roughly 145db at 25Hz if I can find an amp that will make 1000 watts or so on a 3 ohm load.

Im finally starting my box next weekend. Got the plywood to mock it up... and then Ill do it in MDF.

I was in BestBuy last night playing dubstep on two BOOMY "ported box" Polk subs... the ones that were on sale actually. The boomyness was terrible, but it got me xcited!

I just got the box this past friday - thanks again Luke on the craftsmanship you put into these. So I'm all set on that part, and I knew there would be compromises as far as what will fit but just wanna get all I can from this setup.

My previous setup in a 2003 Civic was a single 12" Diamond D6 fiberglassed into the spare tire well with a folded slot port made of mdf grafted into it. It seems like kind of an odd enclosure choice but it basically laid flat on the floor and still allowed me to use the whole trunk. But I didn't have a spare tire with me then. I think I will end up happier with this new setup in every way.
