speaker grill tissue paper material?

alright guys, i am obviously an audio noob. I was taking apart my premium speakers tonight and noticed this tissue like material behind the speaker grill. being that its 20 years, its showing signs of disintegration. Can someone school me on the purpose of this and do i need it?

keeps dirt and crap off the speakers to keep them safe
