Check Control Panel with o2 sensor. Tell me about it.

Does your E30 had to come with the o2 sensor check control panel from factory for this to work. Or will it work even if it did not come from factory with this type of check control panel? If my 87 325ic did not come from factory with an o2 sensor check control panel. Will the panel work and will the o2 sensor illuminate if the o2 sensor goes bad on my car?
