Say I want to run new speaker wire...

I can't figure out how to wire up the amp bypass to my headunit with the stock wiring so I'm thinking about running new wires. Does anyone have an E30 specific guide for doing this with premium sound that will allow the stock tweeters to work?

Also, while I'm at it I'm thinking about replacing the stock fronts with Rockford Fosgate Prime components with built in crossovers. Would this be a worthwhile upgrade in sound quality? I can get them online for 60 bucks.

This has been covered before many times by Luke. (Stereoinstaller). Use the search button and i'm sure you will find the info you need. It may be a sticky.

To put it bluntly, the stock BMW wire is FAR better quality (or at least as good as) then anything you can buy. Doing the amp bypass is super easy. Spend a bit of time and figure it out.

As far as the speakers, Luke is always raving about how good the stock speakers sound (assuming they are in good shape), so you likely won't be able to tell a difference with new speakers.

There is a sticky on bypassing the amp with the factory wiring, but I can't figure it out in my car. The previous owner had installed an aftermarket headunit somehow using the stock amp and fader in 1996. None of the wires seem to be the right colors, either, even though I have premium sound. Hence I am thinking about biting the bullet and running new wires to new speakers, just so I can stop being frustrated by the factory harness.

use the stock wiring and go with some powerbass instead of those pos fosgates. i put these into the factory premium housing with little triming.they are awsome way better then my type r components I have in my other e30.

The rewiring is just driving me insane. I have heard that the factory speakers sound pretty good if they work (which I think mine would if I could figure out how to wire them). Frustrated.

What exactly is the problem you are having? Describe in detail.

If a previous owner f'd up the wiring, it might be just easier to start from scratch and run all new wires so that you know all the connections and wires are good.

I helped a friend sort out a problem with his stereo onetime, only to find that the PO used athletic tape to hold the wires onto the back of a speaker... I am guessing after running out of connectors.

I like to know the work is good. Do it once well and you won't have to touch it for as long as you own the car.
