Get the CDT Classics. Go to www.thezeb.com free shipping and no tax. Theres a four year warrenty with these, and also they have good midbass, and the tweeters sounds similar to the kicker R25 which is popular among audiophiles, and u could purchase the image enhancement kit that will raise your soundstage, and improve your imaging if u care. Great warrenty and really well made speakers that are comparable to the $300-500 speakers.

I guess I just don't consider the Classics when some one mentions CDT. But they'd probably kick ass.
www.audionmore.com is a good place to look. They carry a lot better stuff than thezeb

        ok.

        What is a coax?

I just bought a set of Polk Audio 5.25 EX2550 'component speakers' from a friend that include the door tweeters...for $50.

I have an Alpina CD player. It is like 45x4 watts. thats all i know about it.

I will install the front 5.25's/tweeters and see how the sound is. If I need more, I might get an amplifier.

component=seperate woofer (big part) and tweeter
coaxil=tweeter is mounted in the middle of the woofer, usually cheaper

I'm using a Alpine 7870 (I think) and 4 MA Audio Y2050K 5.25inch speakers. They are pretty damn bad ass and sound great with the Alpine HU.

I rewired the speakers using 16 gauge speaker wire. You should definetly rewire the speakers if you are putting new ones in. I didn't want to at first, but I decided to. It'll take a good hour or so rewiring them, depending on your car and where you want to run the new wires. I left the old ones in and just ran the front speaker wires tucking them under the knee bolster and I re-ran both rear wires around the drivers side and tucked them up under the console. I removed the rear console section and pushed the wires through the hole for the screw that holds the ash tray in place. I then fed the wires up through the carpet in the driveline hump in the rear to under the rear seats. I have a cabrio, but I would assume you have a coupe, but for the coupes, theres a hole for wires that go to the trunk that you can put the new wire in. If I were you, I would keep the stock 15watt external amp out of the new setup. Its just going to distort the sound. Its easier just to leave it in unless you really want to take it out.

Anywas, my MA Audio's sound kick ass for the price and have adjustable tweeters. The cones are also metalic injected, so they aren't cloth.

Stu, those Polks are actually decent speakers, and the price was right on them. Wire your tweeters into the same wires that power your door speakers. The only thing you may want to consider (im not sure they have them or not) is a crossover so that your tweeters do not get bass frequencies. This is bad for a tweeter because it is only made for high frequencies. You should be able to find line crossovers at an audio store or radio shack.

You were actually pretty lucky to have your speakers re-wired. When i did my install i used all of the factory bmw speakers and the factory amp. I am actually pleased with it. The speakers have held up very well, and the car sounds better than the system i had in my jeep.

I will second the infinity speakers. Don't believe everything you may think about sound deflection, sound waves travel strangely, but they dont really lose intensity, it just gets bounced around. I'll include a link to the install i did on my fiero once. Just to show you that it really doesnt matter where you have your speakers. In my case centimeters behind the seats. http://www.geocities.com/iiim3man/fierosubs.html (i know i used cheap subs, but they work well)

You may want to check some settings on your cd player, like loudness, and the bass and treble levels. Perhaps it has adjustable eq settings. 45x4 should be plenty of power. I do highly recommend the inifinity speakers for your rear shelf. You should be able to get a set with a built in tweeter that will fit in the rear plates. Replace all of the factory speaks and you should be good to go.. Next you can think about adding some bass to that beast. (but then again if i had an s50 to listen to i probably wouldnt have the radio on anyway) let me know if this helps or if you have any other questions.

Any word on Rockford Fosgate Componets? How good are they? Will the 6.5 fit up front? Will 50w drive them ok?

I dont really have any experience with the fosgate component sets, but I believe they make very decent woofers. I just looked at rockford's site and they have 3 lines of the component set. They had a punch which is basic, the power, and the RF. Truthfully they all look very well built and seem like they can handle some serious power.

I'm not sure if you were looking to buy new or used, but any of these sets get my vote. 50 watts will be fine. The crossovers should have some adjustment on them as well. My friend ran a box with 2 8s off of his sony xplod cd player (50x4) and they sounded like they were amped. Later he wisend up and got a pioneer.

I cant get started in this car audio stuff anymore, I wont have enough money left to work on my car then!! I really need to update my system.

Thanks for the help Eta. I do not want to spend much either. I just replaced my stock unit with another stock unit because I am redoing my front suspension and really don't want to spend the money right now, but as that unit seems to be a bust(See post marked Stock Stereo), it may be time to just replace the whole thing. Am looking at a Kenwood deck 50x4w that plays MP3's and either the Rockfords or a high end coax. Hopefully will spend no more than $600.

Yea man, those MB Quarts used to be really big with the Fiero guys i talked to about sound systems. Like most component sets i dont have any experience with them, but I have heard very good things about them. They should do well with any system. Power Precision amp... not much to say about that. Do you know what the watt rating is? When I first started with sound equpitment I was looking at a Legacy amp. Oooo, doesnt that sound nice! It was an 800 watt rated amp, but wired at 4 ohms the thing put out ONLY 90 watts RMS (continuous power). I later found a Power Acoustic amp that was rated at 800 max, and 190 RMS at 4 ohms. I used this for my subs. For those components, I would run an amp that has an RMS close to or equal to what your speaker RMS rating is. Probably something that has 50-75 watts RMS. Remember you can always turn something down that is too loud, but its harder on yourself and your speakers to turn something up that is underpowered.
