noob here, Windows roll down not up!

so i just picked up my 89 325i. the driver window rolls down but not up. the seller told me it just needed a new motor and that it was in the trunk. cool. so i swapped the motor in and it still wont roll up :( I swapped the motor to the passenger side to verify that it was a good motor and no problems. tried switching the switches and still no change. passenger window was fine driver was not.

Then while trying to figure out what was wrong with the driver window the passenger suddenly started doing the same!!! now neither of my windows will roll up. they roll down no problem.

I checked for voltage with my test light on the backside of both switches and everything seemed fine. I tried to apply direct power at the motor to see if it made any changes. here is the interesting part. if i apply power to the violet wire it rolls down just fine. if i try applying power to the black wire the wires will spark and get really warm. so i would quickly remove for fear of melting something.

also! when using my test light on the back side of the connecter for the switch i noticed that if i touch the violet wire it will light up just slightly. i know its supposed to when u roll the window down but should it be lit up slightly all the time?

sorry to write so much just giving u as much info as i can :) thanks!!

like the switch buttons? like i said the passenger side window worked fine to begin with. when i swapped the switch to the driver side i had no change. so known good switches are installed.

yeah i m thinking its a wiring issue that is effecting both sides. or both sides are suffering from the same problem. cause its only a 2 wire motor. it must be something in the grounding side of the up circuit. im just not sure. wiring isnt my strong point.

i figured it out!! THE PO put the grounding wire of the driver side switch in the wrong spot. And when i was messing with the passenger side the wire fell out and i wasnt sure where to put it so i copied how the driver side was so then both were in the wrong spot. YAY!!
