It's silly for a track car, but I'm spending more and more time driving my car to work and running errands than driving spiritedly at the race track.
I was tired of my old alpine 7517s, with all of its early 90s contemporary design and tape deck glory, and I have been contemplating ways to integrate my iphone into my e30. I listen to pandora almost exclusively, so I bit the bullet and purchased a $150 aftermarket headunit, in lieu of trying to make my cd43 or other bmw headunit work the way I wanted. So why not use bluetooth? no wires! I don't have to buy some stupid unit that cost as much as the head unit just to adapt the iPod/iPhone into the cd43, on top of the cost of the cd43. I can settle. This head unit actually has 6 RCA line outputs, another plus not having to buy LOCs.
I settled on the JVC KD-X80BT, with my first priority being mostly on capability, then sound quality, then aesthetics.
I also did the cd43-style flush mount mod to the HVAC panel, because there is not a single head unit that sits flush with the e30 HVAC panel. If I ever choose to run the cd43, it will line up flush. I used a cd43 to line up the bracket (which cut from another HVAC, epoxied in using 5 minute liquid epoxy) and that unit is going up for sale soon to offset the cost of my recent upgrades. This HU just so happened to sink in about right, and the colors were tuneable and the face is all black. No CD, simply radio and digital media unit. 2 USBs on rear cables (1 being taken up by the bluetooth reciever), an 2.5mm AUX, and a mic input for the bluetooth handsfree function. $15X, solved all my problems.
I have it running to a Planet Audio 5-ch 1800w (lol at ratings) Amp. Reviews were good on the amp so i decided to give it a shot. Bought it from amazon, so that was also cheap, at $15X or something, and it drives my 4 alpine type-s 5.25 coaxials and 10" sony walmart sub just enough to please me on the freeway doing 80 with the windows down. just over $500, and it doesn't sound bad. Could have used the stock components, but I was curious as to how the 5.25 coaxials sound, since the type-s 6x9 coaxials blew me away when mounted in my buddies e30.
BTW don't buy the the type-s 5.25 coaxes they can handle a small amount of power over the stock components, but they just kinda suck ass and are a waste of money. Oh well.
I will try to amp the stock "premium" components next, maybe bringing back a little more midbass, but I'm not really hoping for much from anything 5.25; I may have to just up the size.
