    Amp troubles.

I thought that my amp was toast, (radio worked, but there was zero sound coming from the speakers) however, it turns out that theres something else going on. I tested to see if there was any power going to the back, and it turns out that there was no power to the red/black power cable. The only cables that registered anything was the ground and the blue/brown cable that suppousedly goes to the rear speakers.

    What gives?

There is no inline fuse, just the one in the fusebox.

My question is what were you getting as a reading from the rear speaker wires?

I had a testlight, grounded to the battery. The only times it lit up were when it was touching the ground wire and the blue/brown wire. Any ideas?

Was that with the amp plugged in? Unplug that thing, you should have no reading at all on the rear speaker leads...and you should have power on the big red wire

The Amp was unplugged. I was just testing the black connector.

wait a minute...you sure you had it on ground? Remember, brown is ground...but either way, sounds like time to tear the back end apart and find that short. If the speaker wires have either ground or positive on them, there are issues.

Would it be a smart idea at this point just to buy a powered head unit and bypass the amp?

Oh hell yes...under $150 and you get WAY better sound, system upgrade options, USB, bluetooth, auxiliary, on and on. Plenty color match pretty well, and some aren't that gaudy. Bluetooth is useless in an E30, they are just too noisy, but kicks ass for a wireless connection to the music and navigation in your phone.

I wrote a guide that covers the late model, other guys have added to it so pretty much all E30s are covered. It ain't easy the first time, but the second one you do will be a total breeze.

                          Thanks!
