    Power Antenna Install

Looking for a picture of a Hirschmann power antenna installed. My 1984 325E had a off brand solid antenna when I bought it. I have a power one I removed from my 1983 528E but the mounting is different.

    Thanks

As Simon shows, 2 bolts into the fender and a rubber grommet on top.

Damn, Simon, that thing is clean!

Slip the grommet in first. Use Dawn dishwashing soap as a lube to get it in the hole, then the antenna slips in from the bottom. You will see a groove around the base of the grommet where the fender goes. I push them up form the bottom.

Thanks for the replies. I seem to be missing the grommet. I just have a metal collar and the outside nut. I have the metal bracket on the car but did not quite see how it attached to the box. I agree, Simons looks super clean, especially for a Wisconsin car. Grew up in Milwaukee and saw many of garage floors when opening trunks! Go Badgers!!

If you have the metal collar and nut, you have the very very early type (look for BMW emblem on chrome part) OR an aftermarket Hirschmann.

The proper later E30 (like '86ish and newer) uses no top nut at all. The metal tube at the top of the antenna has a small "bulb" that fits into the grommet, that is the only body mount there is. Cool thing is they are super quiet, as they are 100% isolated from the body, mounted only to the fender well.

The antenna came out of a 1983 528E, it is going into a 1984 325E. The antenna I took out is a after market straight style. The antenna wire was jammed into the body wire and duct taped. Gee, wonder why I didn't get good reception? Previous owner also had a sub woofer that he removed before I got the car. I assume it was massive as EVERYTHING rattles when I close the door. He did leave me the under car neon lights! Did not take long to remove those.
