Smoking from front driver side duct

Just recently purchased this vehicle, and well driving around i started smelling what seemed to me as wires burning or something. stopped the car and noticed smoke coming out of the duct that is right below the windshield wipers on the driver side. I looked underneath the steering column to see if i could possibly spot what it was, but didn't see anything, and didn't smell anything from under there either. i didnt pull the wiper and the duct off because it was late at night, but just visually looking down in that area i couldn't see anything to could be possibly burning.

That's a very uncommon place for there to be smoke. Was the heater blower motor running? That's also very near to where the main power harness comes through. Any strange electrical issues recently?

Is there rust on the drivers side rocker?

the car all the sudden wasnt starting, so i disconnected battery, cleaned the terminals, and she was back running again. then all the sudden i noticed the smell and smoke. theres no rust either. heater was off as well. i am not at all familiar with electrical wiring schematics either.
