    infinite baffle setup w/ idmax

toying with the idea of giving this a try. What can i do to seal up the rear speaker holes. I don't have a rear stage so pretty much just 2 holes back there. What else needs sealed up besides the area between the sub and ski hole?

I like this idea because i don't care about the sub being loud just looking to save some space in the trunk.

how do i make this look nice though share your ideas.

Ever heard one before? Ever talked to SQ Competitors? Inifinate baffle is suppose to sound VERY good and ID MAX's, from everything that I have heard, are well suited for IB applications. There are some holes on the rear deck that need to be sealed up. Get Peel'n'Seal from Lowe's (its the same thing as Dynamat) in the roofing section and seal up all the holes on the rear deck. You're also going to want to cover the metal behind the backseat with that stuff as well to keep resonance to a minimum. IB setups dont usually take a lot of power because of mechanical limits of the driver. Go to www.elitecaraudio.com and ask them about what kind of power limits youll be looking at. Some guys on there are pretty knowledgable. And by the way... don't expect it to be very loud. Most IB setups arent that loud.

i have the idmax so thats not an issue.

In fact i have everything i need to give this a shot. Idmax subs seem to be very well suited for IB.

I would say you only need about 400w in an IB setup. How much are you plannin on having?

i have no plans my sub is not currently in my car is just sitting in the garage.
I just sent my PG amp back because it was a piece of junk and i coudln't get it out of safe mode. worked for 1 day. Once that comes back i am going to sell it and get an old school amp. Modern amps are annoying.

focal 3 way front stage w/ cdt tweeters (eurosports) is my current setup. I am running this off a ppi amp. I forget which model.

i hate to butt in, but could somebody explain how an infinite baffle system would work in our e30's? I just read some things about setups in the ceiling for home theatres, but I can't picture it in the trunk of a car.

The sub is not going to have a box, but rather, trunk itself is going to act as the box. So every little crease and what-not needs to be sealed for it to sound and function well.

Keep us updated in this project. I have always wanted to do a IB setup with a IDMAX10.

^^^ What he said. You can mount the sub on the metal behind the backseat, or on the metal thats on the rear deck. Either way will work just fine. Then seal up EVERY little tiny hole you can find and just hook the sub up. Thats inifinite baffle. NOT to be mixed with free air... Free air is like sitting the sub on the floor and letting it play.

Hahaha...free air is something you get at an old fashioned gas station.

                    Just kidding, Will.

                    OK, OT:

Looking at the PDF on ID's site http://www.imagedynamicsusa.com/pdf/...0D2%20spec.pdf seems to me IB woundn't be too bad...it is a really diifferent kind of sound, though. Easily the lowest distortion, least "colored" kind of bass, stupid low adn clear, but kind of uncontrolled if your amplifier has limited amperage, poor slew rate or a damping factor under about 500.

On the other hand, strength of the baffle is a HUGE importance. I usually do 3 or 4 layers of 3/4" MDF, PLUS dynamat to control resonance.

BTW, I have done about 30 to 50 E34's in IB, probably 10 E30 and E21's combined in IB.

If you EVER listen to rap, dont even bother. Jazz, blues, Lyle Lovett (1st CD kicks ass) most rock...not loud, but can be really impressive.

Good advice Luke. Jazz and blues would be PERFECT IB candidate type of music.

                        'cept for Keb' Mo', yo.

Or, the all time best Bass solo, "Cold Cuts" (live) by Albert King.

No one will ever touch Johnny Gayden on that PBass, not even Nate Laboriel or Marcus Miller.

If any of these guys mean anything to you, you better have a subsonic filter on your amp. I would think 25Hz, 18db/oct should do it for that monster woofer.

luke your signature is fucking hilarious. I do listen to rap some and some electronic music so yeah this probably isn't the best setup. While we have this going can someone recommend an older amp that i could use to power my idmax10. I have a ppi amp on my focals which i like, but i need one w/ more power for the sub.

Just to make it clear i am looking for sq out of this system i don't really need it to get that loud but i am sure it will be capable. all my wiring is monster wire also. Alpine head unit 98xx i forget it is a decent one.

Find damn near anything made by Zapco in the late 80's, early 90's. Woofer control like no other. Butler, Phaze...even high current Orion (big red fuckers).

PPI, as long as it is not newer than about 1995. Look for a tightly regulated power supply...that huge ass old Alpine with the fan in the center of the heatsink, but it would be easier to find a M3Touring.

Yanno, you might wanna red up on the old Dynaudio theory of "Vario Venting" which has a technical name I can't recall.. Basically, a membrane that raises the mechanical "Q" of the woofer. Allows for a woofer like yours, being low "Qts" and super low resonant frequency (20.4Hz on a 10...WTF?) to work as a higer frequency driver. When I say higher, i mean like 25 to 30 Hz, more appropriate for modern music.

The JL "/" series would also be a good choice, especially with a tuneable high pass filter at the bottom of the subs range (AKA Subsonic filter).

Oh, I hijacked that GIF from Craigslist...thanks!

so in a more non-technical way of putting it, IB setup won't hit low enough?
Speaking of saving trunk-space, Luke, what do you think about spare-wheel-well mounted sub?

And do you happen to have any pictures of the IB setup you have done in E34s and E30s?
I'm no audiophile, and to me, IB setup sounded great to me, but if there are better spacing saving oriented setups that are better, I'd love to hear about it.
I have a rear strut bar, and I don't really don't want to remove it, just because I already have it. Also, I don't want to build a box with a false wall, because I will lose the easy access to the rear shock towers.

                              edit: sorry for the threadjack.
