    Head unit in the glovebox

After installing an aftermarket stereo in the glovebox, I installed an IR system so that I could control the important functions without having the glovebox open. The system is this little $25 thing:

I drilled a hole in one of the switch blanks in the dash. You just pop it out from the inside, and drill a larger and larger hole until the IR receiver fits just right. A dab of Gorilla Glue on each corner of the receiver, and a pair of vice grips for a couple minutes will keep it in place very well.

Now I have factory look and any modern head unit they offer, now and in the future. Is using a remote annoying? Kinda. Am I annoyed at how my glovebox looks? Kinda. Is it nice to have MP3s and other devices work in this car without the dash looking hideous? Yes.

The repeater (taped to the head unit) runs through the hole between the glovebox and the factory head unit location. There is plenty of room for the wires. The IR repeater is just spliced into the switched power and ground of the stereo.

I have (Almost) the same alpine in mine, i reckon it looks just fine, even around less buttons and tech as i have a 1986. But i commend your desire for old school looks, both in the dash and the whole stereo-in-a-glovebox thing.

I can't imagine the head unit likes being slammed every time you close the glove box door though.

Nice, but I guess I was expecting to see a blank plate or gauges in the factory location... Why not an MP4 or better yet Siri control iPhone to a 5-ch. amp??

I'm not sure a blank plate looks cleaner...

The car is "loud enough" for the moment. I plan to install a Luke Box at some point, but I'm in no hurry. It's just nice to finally have any kind of music. With this setup, the system is infinitely upgradable without ever having to really muck with the factory bits ever again.
