    Early model rear shelf cutting.

Figuratively stole some Rockfords 6x9 coax. Removed rear parcel shelf, glued some black felt on.

Now tricky part, must cut sheetmetal in rear to fit speakers.
anyone ever do this? how about some advice. i would rather not use spacers or use smaller dia. speakers

just use a 1' spacer and lift the speaker off the sheet metal deck.

you are gonna make it acoustically worse by cutting into the trunk.

Ah, gotcha. I use basically a tiny sawzall, AKA "Pneumatic Body Saw". How do they sound?

yes, I did read all of your post. I disagree with cutting the sheet metal. infinite baffle midrange is very muddy sounding. If you are looking for quality, after cutting the sheet metal you will want to make small MDF enclosures to tighten up the sound. And next time, before knocking someone, you should try doing some research on the topic. Cutting bodywork to fit larger speakers gives you bigger speakers but does not give you quality sound. Quality sound comes from doing right.

Thanks Cabri, good post. I never head of infinate baffle midrange, ever. So afer google and some patience im insignificantly smarter. If i under stood correctly my plan was to you use roofing waterproofer (an aluminum sheeting back by a rubber like adhesive) on the sheemetal of the shelf and the rear seats.

co axs have not been installed yet. awaiting the tweeters 10'' sub and amp. My plan is to amplify the front components/tweets and the subwoofers. The 6x9 is just filler, thinking now i could have just deleted the rear shelf speakers all together. it being such a small car

I just deleted my rear speakers, I don't sit in the back.

Anyways, cutting the rear deck reminds me of an old install story from Germany. A guy bought a brand new M5 back in the day, and had a stereo put in, less than a week after owning it. He was bumping the tunes at some inspection station or something, so the inspectors came out, and he bragged up the system. Turns out the stereo shop cut into the rear deck to allow bass from the 12's to get into the interior, or mounted them there, or whatever. The real kicker is that they consider that structural metal, and that wrote off his brand new (less than a month old) M5.

If you are thinking of using one of my subwoofer boxes, you cannot have any protrusion into the trunk on the rear deck. The fit is just too tight.

If you are using a generic box, should be no worries...just lots of rattles!

Thanks! The cool thing is you can get clean, tight, solid bass with 100 watts and a $30 woofer. I am not even kidding, even a $50 Walmart amp rocks ass.

The way the box seals into the cabin gives several benefits: first, much higher efficiency, as all of the bass goes into the cabin, none wasted bouncing around in your trunk.

Second, your car is actually quieter.

Third, due to the fact that all of the energy goes into the cabin, you get no rattles.

Fourth, you get far greater clarity and detail, so the bass is more satisfying.

Fifth, you get to keep most of your trunk space. Even using our spiffy amp rack, spare tire access is not an issue.

All in all, seems to be about the best overall solution. I know that sounds conceited, but these really do work well.
