    Possible to short the car?

Hey everyone, if water were to get into the trunk, particularly on the drivers side and contact any of the wires back there, what is the possible damage?

Car is an 87 325is and today, I found a pool of water in the jack cavity in my trunk. There is also some on the passenger side in the battery tray but not nearly as much.

The battery has been dead for a while and I used to be able to jump start it, then the battery would die again shortly after, but now it just cranks and won't start...

    Thanks everyone, Peter.

Jack side probably won't do anything.
It's possible that water could cause damage on the battery side, although the water would have to be in contact with the terminals on the battery. More likely if you had to jump start your car every time before, it's just a completely dead battery, or severely corroded ground point.

I had water in my battery tray, I just drilled a couple new drain holes and it has been fine since.

I need to throw the battery from my brother's truck in to see if I can get it going. I was hoping it was a dead battery and not a bad alternator or I have something unplugged that has a constant draw on the battery... I'll try it out tomorrow and see what happens.
