Installing a/d/s 325is speakers

Hi All - I have a set of ads 325is component speakers (5 1/4" drivers, tweeters and separate crossovers) that I've had since the late 80's and am now wanting to install in my 91 318is.

I tracked down a set of door tweeter pods that are in very good shape and wanted to place them in there. However, it appears that the tweeters are a bit to large to fit and they are rather heavy. Has anyone installed these in that location before? I don't want to crack the pods (as is currently the case with the sony tweeters the PO installed in the pods). Should I just install the ads in the rear shelf and go with another speaker combo up front?

It can be done. The tweeters that is. Just depends on your level of craftsmanship. If its somthing you fear you will mess up take them to some one. If they break them its on them.
What can be done is you can front mount them and ditch the OE tweeter cover.

Thoughts? Yes, simply enough, buy another set of tweeters!

Seriously though, yes, I did that same tweeter in James Crivellones MTech1 car. I used bondo, fiberglass, kitty hair, plastic spray texture, high build primer and paint to d0 it, likely $80 in materials or more bought, but used $1.25's worth.

I don't think I have any pics at all, maybe PM him, see if he can get a pic of them for you.

It was likely my 40th "build out" of something in bondo and I gotta say, was one of the tougher ones. Nothing as bad as the 17" monitor in the factory overhead console of a Navigator, but tough, nonetheless.

Oh yeah....I could not figure a way to use the stupid ADS driver, just not possible to shove it in that hole without major surgery. The issue is the door jamb gets in the way. I would consider doing the driver in the door if I wanted to hear that particular speaker...and believe me, I understand why you would want to hear them, having installed literally hundreds of sets of that same speaker.but damn, what a pain in the ass to do for such a noisy car!

OK - so front it a total pain. I may just put them in the rear then, the PO put the same Sony separates there and one is blown. I'm assuming placing them in the back should be easier.

Any recommendations on what components to put up front? The car has a 4x50 PPI amp in it powering all the speakers so I've got some decent power.

I did some Orion (now DEI chinese crap too) XTR series components, they weren't bad.

Me? There have been too many different speakers from them called "Pro" to know without an exact model number. Generally solid performers though, but typically fairly top dollar. There was a stretch in the late 90's that I was pretty underwhelmed with power handling, but they fixed that, and I bet all of those are dead anyway.

If it is the early ones (the best of them IMO) the frame of the speaker is thick, and there is no way to get them under the stock grille. You can't cut into the kickpanel much without hitting the door jamb.

Budget - haven't really thought about it. I'm willing to put a bit into it but as you said it is a noisy car. Only reason I've got the ads speakers is I've had them for ages!

I am after good, accurate sound - I'm hoping to stay around $150 +/- if I had to throw a # out there. Thoughts?

I had them posted for $200 obo + shipping. If you are interested make me an offer. They are mint. Never mounted. Found them while looking for some other junk in my storage. I had a driver let go one day. I cried as I new I would not be able to replace them..

A company called German Maestro now owns all the old factories and tooling for German MB Quart product. Haven't ever run into any though, so can't vouch for it.
