Music...I am a total cracker. Clasic rock, alternative rock, the occasional electronic stuff, some Latin house music from time to time. No dubstep or phat beatzzz here, yo! I'm just looking for some solid low frequency extension and snappy snare drum reproduction.

Got to love that...grown men with college degrees buying shiny things for our damn trunks, fer crissakes....once you see one in person though, just gotta have it. Its just audio rice really, but it does cool the amps and it does protect them and the light is sweet....plus they look really nice!

Oh hey, this is sort of a teaser announcement: we are shortly going to announce a full E30 speaker system, completely designed and tuned from the ground up using absolutely world-class components. Our system will include new speaker wire as well, and an amp rack is expected to house the crossovers, which will be more of Justins always spectacular work. Gorgeous and guaranteed fantastic sound quality. As far as pricing, lets just say $2K spent on any other system would pale in comparison, as no one else builds anything really good that fits this car. We don't expect to sell many of them, but thats OK, we are doing this just for you guys who have supported us for so long who want something really special, something truly exceptional.

I replied your PM with a pile of additional questions. Once I have a surer idea of the drivers to look at, I will model them up and post about it. I'm pretty stoked about finally getting a proper enclosure, and being rid of all the electronic junk in the trunk. $180 is a hell of a deal on the 8" box (and even more of a deal on the 10" box). Having built a number of my own enclosures (car and home), I'd say that $180 is overall less than what it would cost me to DIY when factoring in all the time I would have to spend (and the fact that I am supposed to be working on my house's baseboards...if my wife catches me building more speakers before that is done, oh boy.....lol).

I don't have much to say other than my 10 inch box seems high quality, fit perfect, sounds good, and isn't "that big" in the trunk. Yes it is wide, and tall, but not deep. It is only ~4.5 inches deep from the "top" of the trunk, and extending straight down.

That is just awesome, so glad to hear you are happy with it. Damn things just put out, don't they? I hear people say "I thought my car had broken, something was just thunking like hell, shaking the whole damn car so I hit the pause button and it stopped...then I realized I had been missing out on a cool part of a song I have been listening to for years!"

ANYWAY...Luke, I am sort of torn between your 8" and 10" boxes. The 8" one has appeal for space reasons. About how low in frequency can I go with the 8" box (-3dB)? Obviously that depends somewhat on driver selection, so given my previous question, what is the best bang-for-the-buck driver for the 8" box? What is the best no-cost-limit 8" driver for it? I am not after earth-shattering bass, but I'd definitely like to make sure that drums and such are properly heard in music. The low-profile 10" sub I have baffle-mounted now is nice, but it isn't the cleanest bass since it isn't in a box. I assume that an 8" in your box can probably more than keep up with my baffled 10"? (it is this one).

Since all amps these days are the same foreign-made nonsense, this is the compact amp that I am looking at sticking in there.

Would this amp (4.75" x 7.5" footprint) fit on the side of the 8" enclosure) somewhere? That would be PERFECT!

Honestly, I say the 10" is the winner in the size/wallop/leftover trunk space. I will say this though, what I recommend is look at your music collection. If it is more than 75% dubstep/D-n-B/Rap, get a 12". Between 40% and 60%, get a 10...if under 5%, get an 8".

Note the gaps...thats where you are on your own! but I sent you specs, model up a storm, I want to see how it looks with your modeling. Just remember that with heavy car audio cones, box space goes way down.

You should see a tiny rise at about 45hz, just that little bump to smooth out the E30 50Hz suckout using a typical 8"" Qts around .5, Fs around 32hz.

Let me know what you wanna do. PS: Dude in LA, "Robrez", has an 8" with a type R. Of everything I have heard, that is the winner. Best mix of slam and detail, it kicks ass. The Boston was tight as hell and took 3 weeks to loosen up, but it was great after that. The Sony had just wicked control, played stupid low and generally kicked ass...but SVC only, and that amp neeeds to see a 2 ohm load.

OK, back to E39 boxes, we gotta get this done so we can get 2 different 900HP E46 M3 Verts done and get started on a gorgeous E24 M6...so, since we have so much piled up, I had best get back to it.
