Subwoofer idea

I've been thinking about subwoofer location and wanted some outside opinion on this. I currently have a 12" floating around in the trunk, but my car has turned into more of a grocery go getter/snowboard transporter.

What I'm thinking is mounting a 10" on the trunk side of the rear deck (to the sheet metal), cutting a hole in the sheet metal and the actual visible deck and mounting a grill on the rear deck. I will then make and flush mount an ABS box behind it in the trunk side (as thin as possible while still being sufficient). I'll work out any weird angles without much problem and will get the box the correct demensions while still sealing it up (probably using angle brackets). I have a couple months at work to mess with this once I get all my measurements.

I may first try a free air, but I know I'll be unimpressed with it. I haven't looked closely at the bottom side of the rear deck to see if this is possible, but I may just try to build a box branching from the frame (to avoid weird angles on the deck) and seal the front of the sub off from the rear.

What do you guys think?

Theres nowhere to put a 10 on the rear deck. In the middle it will hit your brake light, and on the sides theres a whole bunch crap.
Also, the bars to keep your trunk up get in the way.

An ABS box is nowhere near strong enough for any decent sub. It will flex so much that it makes particle board look good.

I think for space saving, your best bet would be a custom fiberglass box on the drivers side area (directly opposing the battery tray).

A sealed box would probably be like 6-8 inches away from the seat area, and only take up one side. Is that seriously too much space to give up for some groceries?

I have a single 10" in a bandpass box in my trunk. If i need to put my snowboard through the back seat i can turn the box perpendicular to the back seats and have the sub box facing the opposite side of the trunk. Takes up less than 1/3 of the width of my trunk, not bad for the bass you get IMO.

Ya I don't know man, I have a 12" sub/amp setup and can still fit a hockey bag in my trunk. E30 trunks are pretty big if you set your stuff up right its not near as space consuming as people thing.

The rear deck is small, you could maybe put to 8's in there.

You can fab up boxes to enclose them from the bottom, too. Like a JL stealthbox, only different!

Yeah, I didn't even think about the trunk springs, so I guess that idea is out. 1/2" ABS (2 1/4" pieces welded together through the use of acetone) with reinforcements would not flex with a 10" box. I currently have a 12" with my amp on the floor in the trunk (which renders much of my trunk useless being paired with a tool box). I'm wanting to do something, just for the fact that I can haha. Likely, I'll end up just building a 10" sub and putting it in a nice custom built box. I thought about the space where the jack is in the trunk, but thought I'd have problems with vibration, plus I don't have that much experience with fiberglass.

Are you sure ABS plastic is acoustically dead? There are a lot of dense woods out there, but the reason MDF is chosen for enclosures is not necessarily just because it is dense, but because it is also acoustically dead.

I have a 12" subwoofer in the trunk of my CONVERTIBLE and I STILL have complete use of the entire trunk!

I put the sub in the spare tire compartment

Make sure you get sbs to work with 'Free Air' These are not, and altho they still sound good, they do not sound as good as they did before when incased in a box.
