I recall years ago folks using MiniMacs and screens of various sizes for this type of install in the VW world.

Is it better and more cost effective to simply usie a mini-PC and screen of your choice?

OK, since you aren't able, I will answer.

        No. there isn't room.

First, if you plan to have a useable angle, the depth is limited by the floor. Below the floor (for those thinking to modify the trans tunnel) is, of course, the transmission.

In front is the heater box, so yes, that can be modified, but the heater core is roughly 2" behind where my screen is, so that would require extensive modifications.

You could move the unit more rearward, but then you have to increase the angle (again, the floor) or backwads (the shifter)...so basically, if the screen is over an inch thick, it isn't going to happen gracefully.

And, of course, anything is possible if you thrown enough money and time at it.

Yes, exactly. Using a DD radio is basically impossible since it just won't fit. There are a bunch of interesting little $100 Android boxes too, there are quad and octo-core with as much as 16GB of RAM onboard, cute little LED touchscreens, all kinds of options...it's the software that is the issue. Finding something that does what you want can be tough...but yeah, thats the plan for me.

i really like this setup in this video. He even used his steering wheel control buttons to adjust volume for tablet. I also liked the look in minute 26:10

I would prefer to not use a tablet myself, I'd rather have no physical buttons for easier bezel-making
