my odometer stopped working a few weeks ago, my trip meter a few months before that. The speedo and everything else still work perfectly. I pulled the cluster, tested the connection and check the gears, everything seems in perfect order. What else should i be looking at?

The odometer is driven by plastic gears. They are broken, its extremely common in e30s.
odometergears.com if you want to fix it, but I'd just leave it (thats what I did in multiple cars)
