Yes and no. The pot and knob can be had for around $5, a typical line driver (300mV to 3V is the approximate range of boost needed) can be had for as little as $25 and that is all the JL piece is. IMO, $60 ain't bad considering thr hassle saved.
BTW, we are doing a run of E24 boxes this week if you are thinking of subwoofing that thing.

i did search, albeit google but only got a couple threads saying eq->amp. i like the idea of the jl with the volume knob. is there a cheaper alternative?Yes, but depending on the amp, it will suck ass.
You AUX source does not have adequate output to run the input of most amps properly. You need something for a pre-amp or "line driver".
One I have found to be generally excellent is the JL Audio CL-RLC, it is a volume knob and pre-amp for around $60.
There have been dozens of threads on this subject, covered to death, please search.

Yes, but depending on the amp, it will suck ass.My 6 is getting stripped out for its new life as a track car but I'm not ready to get rid of music in the car completely since I still drive it regularly. I dont have the space for a head unit anymore so I'm thinking about getting a cheap 2ch amp, wiring the 4 speakers to there then and RCA to AUX cord on the rcas on the amp. Would this work?
