There was a thread that I saw saying that you had to run a couple silicone diodes because the 13.8 was shutting if off.
I should have said dc plug connector
All the ones that I found were a really the gauge. Like sketchy thin
AUX only sound system

The built in over voltage circuit shuts the amp off at 14.4V, so you should have been fine running it straight off the battery. I don't understand what you mean by a "dc plug switch".Leave a comment:

quick update: i got the lepai and while it seemed cool, wiring it to the car seemed like a headache. you would need to drop the voltage cause apparently itll shut itself off at over 12v not to mention that it uses an dc plug switch so you would have to wire that in too.
i just returned it and am waiting for this in the mail

I did this exact thing in my "race" car... Just ran power from the battery, to a switch, then to the amplifier(4 channel, 50 watts/channel). RCA->AUX cable plugs into my Iphone.. Then ran it to two alpine speakers I had lying around. My car is loud as shit, and I can still hear it just fine on the freeway.... It definitely isn't anything great quality wise, but it is better than factory premium audio. I'm going to throw in a better amp, and a pre amp setup like SI said.. Then Run a pair of 16x9's behind me and call it a day.Leave a comment:

No, it works fine but the quality of sound is horrid. Literally garbled and almost impossible to use for anything.
We swapped an old 2 channel radio shack receiver in its place and all is good.
This echoes precisely what others have said about this exact unit BTW.
The LePai, on the other hand, seems pretty OK. I haven't heard one yet thoughLeave a comment:

bought a lepai, gonna see how that works. thanks! and ill update this once I get it all installed for people looking to do this in the future
as an afterthought, would this be more powerful than my headunit? it was 22w x 4Leave a comment:

Those Lepai amps are highly regarded by audio enthusiasts. People even open them up and modify them to e even better. I've got one and it should easily run 4 speakers with plenty of volume. I was running two 6.5" infinities and two 1" tweeters and it would play at painful volume levels sitting on my desk.
Here is info on modding them:

well this popped up on ebay:

for 20 bucks i might just pick it up even if it doesnt have the volume knob. then just throw that and a cheap amp in there. thats if the lepai wont be enough for the speakers. theyre all infinity reference btw.Leave a comment:

Perfect! Can I wire the 4 speakers to there or would 2 be pushing it?Leave a comment:

Yes and no. The pot and knob can be had for around $5, a typical line driver (300mV to 3V is the approximate range of boost needed) can be had for as little as $25 and that is all the JL piece is. IMO, $60 ain't bad considering thr hassle saved.
BTW, we are doing a run of E24 boxes this week if you are thinking of subwoofing that thing.
Luke
I'm trying to take as much weight out as possible so unfortunately there's no room for a sub in this build.
Here's another question, are there any tiny amps that I wouldn't have to run a power cable from the battery? I really don't care much for sound quality, I just want to get some music in here.Leave a comment:
