    1988 325i - #21 fuse melted, won't start

Hey guys, I need you to give me some rope here because i'm lost.

Today I washed the car with my PW, as I have done many many times. When I started to dry the door jams, I immediately saw smoke coming out from right side B pillar. I rushed to open the hood and noticed #21 fuse was frying. Cutted off the battery as quick as I could, tried to remove the fuse (already melted) and when I connected the battery again (half an hour later or so), the car wouldn't start at all. It cranks but apparently I have no fuel or spark.

    Things I have already done:
1- Partially removed the fuse box and the wire is fried (red/green). The rest of the wires seems to be ok, but they are all laced with a zip tie, which I didn't remove.

2- Removed and inspected fuel pump and unloader relays, both seem to be ok

3- Carried out the stomp test after connecting the battery and cranking it a couple of times, in both cases it gives me the "1444" code (everything ok).

I suspect the culprit is the door switch (water may have entered and mede the short circuit) but what really annoys me is WTF the #21 fuse has to do with either fuel or ignition. I've checked several wiring diagrams and none of them seem to relate any circuit protected by this fuse with the DME.

Has anybody experienced something even close to this? Of course radio, antenna and interior lights are out, but I really need to find out why the car won't start.

Any advice will be much appreciated. Thank you and excuse my english.

    Regards
    Guido

    PS: The car is a 08/1988 325i

"Injection Electronics" is on the list for fuse 21, so that is likely the issue. Fix the burned wire and replace the fuse and see if it fixes it. Should be a 7.5A fuse. What was in it?

You can download the wiring diagram for your car here:

Exactly, in other lists it appears as "fuel delivery". I ran through the wiring diagrams but if I undestood correctly it would be related only if I had an OBC (which I don't, only the 6 button one).

If the wiring is exactly the same, then I may have fried something in the DME. Also, most probably the wire is damaged all way up to the dome light (the smoke was coming out from the right B pillar, so antenna would be out of the question for now). The radio chimed a couple of times as I first saw the smoke.

      I'm starting to get nervous.

Well, it's official. I'm really nervous.

I checked the fuses again today. #11 fuse was blown as well. Changed it, cranked the engine and it blew again. Replaced the fuse, disconnected the fuel pump, and checked for resistance across the connector terminals (nearly zero = short circuit). Cranked it again and it blew. Started to remove the carpet and found that the wires running through the right side are completely melt, including a brown wire which I'm sure is used by the fuel pump. So, apparently I have to completely replace the wiring harness on that sector, as well as the fuse box.

Could anyone please confirm whether this harness is the same for all E30's??? If so, I could probably source a new one from a Euro 318i being scraped.

        Thanks a lot!
