Hey all,
Was wondering if I could get some advice for testing a dead amp... pretty sure it's dead but I just want to make sure.
My setup:
-stock premium speakers and tweeters up front, I replaced the rear shelf speakers with Pioneer TS-D1302R 5 1/4" coaxials.
-Planet Audio AC1800.5 5 channel Amp
-8" LukeBox
-8" Alpine Type R sub
So I've got the whole thing running off my iphone next to my seat, via an aux cable to the trunk. I've got a level controller for the bass that came with the amp, and the JL level controller for volume that Luke recommends on many installs. The amp is also wired to turn on with the ignition (ran a wire from the stock deck location).
The weird thing about the install is that I learned I couldn't disconnect the battery without first unplugging the amp. For example, everything was fine if I parked, left the battery connected etc. It would turn on and off with the car. The problem is I store my car for long periods, and have a habit of turning off the battery when not in use. The first week after the install I did just that, but got a call from my dad a day later saying the car was making a weird high pitched frequency/noise. I showed up to inspect and was amazed to see the amp powered on (the LED/logo was lit up) with the car's battery disconnected. Somehow the amp had jumped to ground and powered itself on. I'm sure that did some heavy duty damage to my week-old amp... But from then on I made sure to disconnect the ground on the amp first before turning off the battery. And to connect the battery first before connecting the negative on the amp.
The whole thing was working fine for the last year or so, got really loud with clean bass. It wasn't the cleanest install with all the cords in the cabin, but everything worked. Anyways, I hadn't driven the car in a few weeks, so last weekend I took it out.
When I plugged in the iphone, I heard a pop from the back. The bass was still coming through, although more muffled. And I was getting no sound from the fronts, and just the slightest distorted mess from the rear coaxials. Safe to say it's the amp? The last time I took the car out, about a month before, I messed up the order of first connecting the battery -> then the amp. Which caused a spark...
Thanks, let me know what you think.
