Which stock BMW radios fit flush in the E30?

Hey, Just a quick question. I searched but every thread I find is about replacement CD or aftermarket headunits. Are the e36 radios a drop in replacement for the E30? What about the e46? I am looking to get a stock BMW radio, cassette is fine I don't need the CD43 because I've decided to go the LCI8 route , thanks Stereo Installer for the tip BTW! Anyway, there are a ton of them on ebay and a couple that have been refurbished but since all I want out of it is radio and a nice stock look/fit I just need to know which ones are compatible.

If a thread already covers this, please point me in that direction.

    Thanks!

I may have mis-spoke. However the stock E30 radio sits, flush or not flush is fine. I guess what I am asking is does the E36 radios fit in the same as the E30 stock radios, or do they stick out further?

the e36 radio sticks out a little bit. however on most installs, people just sand down the plastic bezel that goes around the face of the radio, and are able to get it to sit like the e30 stock radio. Do a google search for 'e36 radio in e30 flush mounting' and that outta help.

No, it sticks out way too far for "a little sanding".

Unless you do the actual work to fit flush, it won't. It will stick out well over 1/4". Some people don't care, I think it looks like complete ass.

For some reason, the e30 factory radios all seem to use a "thin" faceplate, which lets it sit flush in the dash opening. Other factory radios (e34/e36 included), along with aftermarket units have a "thicker" face that will stick out. The solution is either to modify the HVAC panel opening on the car, or modify the unit and/or faceplate assy. I was able to modify mine HVAC panel with some materials from the local hobby shop, and a lot of quality time with a Dremel.
