Aftermarket Speakers dont align

Hey Rev, hoping to get your help on this one. I bought a set of JL C5 speakers (5.25") but the mounting holes dont line up. It appears that the JL holes are slightly narrower than the stock speakers were. Anyone else ever run into this problem? How did you go about fixing it?

I was thinking of buying a very thin but strong piece of sheet metal, cuting out a hole for the JL speaker, then mounting the sheet metal to the kick panel and the speaker to the sheet metal. However i'm afraid that if I push the speaker out too far, the grill wont fit back properly.

Any helpful suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Would this still ensure that the speaker is held in properly and safely? Also should I use some sort of foam gasket to cover the hole from the slightly smaller speaker?

Foam, or something like strip caulk.
