Best looking aftermarket / oem swap head unit in E30

I am looking to upgrade my speakers and heat unit. There aren't many good looking, simple, clean looking head units out there.

What have you guys installed that keep it looking clean and similar to OEM with modern controls and features?

I put in the Pioneer 80PRS a couple months ago, and LOVEEEE it. Matches with the interior perfectly. Painted the trim surround using SEM trim paint so it matches better with the console.

Dang that dial sticks out far lol. I like the screen display but don't like how far out the entire unit is from the rest of the dash.

Pretty much all the manufacturers have figured out that most of us want a simpler look. Good thing too, because we have lots of color match options these days.

If I were buying a deck today, I would focus on the parts that give the best performance, but you didn't say anything about the level of performance you expect.

Yeah not too big on performance for now. Just want Bluetooth and or USB to replace my dated deck.

Kenwood seems to have the simplest / cleanest designs. Sucks most all have the gloss finish though. Terrible for finger prints and glare.

I've always been a fan of Blaupunkt for their understated face plates. Check out some of them on Crutchfield. http://www.crutchfield.com/

For example, here is the Blaupunkt Toronto:

Well when my head unit from my old car took a crap earlier this year, I picked up a JVC Kd-R208 from a guy on kijiji for $30. The colour is red, not orange, but I'm on the poor side, so beggars can't be choosers, but its worked well. At some point I want something with the lighting more matched to the rest of the dash... that Pioneer is nice.

What are you thinking speaker wise? If you want a quick upgrade for a small outlay, see if you can get a good set of the E30 Premium speakers from one at the boneyard. They definitely beefier than stock and they sound so much better and it cost me $20. I got mine from an 88, and the difference was clear. If you read some of the threads here, there are a few who belief these are best 5.25" speakers for this car if you're not planning on serious modifications.

A pair of cheap 5.25s would cost me at least $60, so $120 for all four at a minimum. I don't need a woofer or anything... my car money is better spent elsewhere.

I am running the stock premium speakers. My current head unit is an ugly old jvc. I am just looking for options for clean / stock looking units as the title states. Not worried about performance or pairing a speaker setup.

I have the JVC kd apd49 and it's pretty alright, not too ugly, and red matches well. It doesn't have bluetooth, so don't get that one, but if you switch brands you'll have to rewire the new adapter. The new cheap JVC ones are ugly as sin, obviously made for the ricer market. Something like the KD-AHD75BT is decent enough.

The previous owner was an idiot and did not know how to wire a radio. It is a complete disaster. I am going to see if I can salvage the OEM wire harness. So rewiring to a different brand is not a concern.

I just put in a regular C33, and use a Monster cassette adapter to connect to my iphone. In the future I'll put in the BavSound kit for the iphone, bluetooth, sirius, etc.
Speaker wise, I took a HiFi harness and amp from an E36 and put it in, bought the oem mids and tweeters and put them in my door panel. 10 speaker sound system. Epic

I just threw up a little in my mouth.

Taking out the gauges gives you some much needed room to access wires behind the stereo, and when you push the stereo in the final time you can hold the wires out of the way.

                          Good luck!

Kurt - I looked at that and the Kenwood KDC-BT955HD In-Dash CD/MP3/WMA Car Stereo Receiver w/ Bluetooth, HD Radio, Pandora Control. The Kenwood was a clear winner because I use BT a lot.
