Hi guys,
Just bought a new HU, which I think is a bargain.
It is a mechless and plays FLAC files.
I previously bought the Kenwood KMM 357SD, didn't get a chance to install it, but never really liked the look of it, especially the left side of it, also the buttons illumination can be changed, the screen digits stays bright blueish white. Also only 1 pre-amps outputs...
older KMM-357SD :

So I went looking around and again Kenwood won my heart. there are a few Pioneers now in Europe that can play FLAC files but not very nice looking IMHO.
So here comes the KMM-361SD, with similar characteristics, but have in addition, two 2.5V RCA pre-amps instead of only 1, a better look for an E30 I think, the screen digits color can also be changed.
specs here :

I am not a fan of the silver colored button but I guess it can be painted or replaced with a black one quite easily.
This thing does everything, controls Ipod, recharge it, reads SD HC, USB, especially FLC files which I have a lot of.
The best part of all, is that it cost me new in France, the very high price of 55 USD !!!
Newer KMM-361SD :

My E30 is my fun car, so i dont plan to spend too much $$$ on the stereo.
My plan is to have a simple clean install, and cost effective.
It will be basically the following :
HU :
Kenwood KMM-361SD ( above / purchased )
Amp :
Alpine KTP-445U ( hidden in the dash ) using exclusively RCA for Front/Rear speakers ( purchased )
Speakers :
front - DLS R5-A comps which I already have installed, with the tweeters in the original E30 location. ( purchased )
rear - Some Sony coaxials I have but they will be there just for a little rear fill.
Sub :
Planning to buy an Alpine SWE-1200, which is a small powered sub, with the advantage of having a separate Amp that can be installed in the dash too, with the Sub unit under the passenger seat and the remote in the ashtray ( to buy) :

With all this done I expect to have a very good quality sound at a decent price, obviously will not beat any SPL but the SQ should be clean with FLAC files, RCA use only and a clean install.
Understand Luke will come up and says it is only a 16bit D/A :p but I think for my needs it will look clean, the HU will match the E30 lighting, and I dont see how it could sound bad if I install/tune everything correctly...
What you think ?
Cheers Pierre
