    Ported enclosure question

I built my very first sub enclosure yesterday... took about 6 hours, excluding trying to do all the math and tuning...

I decided to go with a slotted port, as I have heard them before and was very impressed. The internal volume is 3.9 cu feet, and the port is ~1.5 cu ft: 44.2 inches long, 14 inches tall, 3 inches wide. This is supposed to tune the port to 22hz.

It turned out to be huge: 36 x 22.5 x 15.5 externally. I broke a small part of the face while putting it my trunk! Part of the reason I built it so large curiosity. I want to build a smaller one that is tuned to 22hz and see what the performance differences are.

Using a RockFord Fosgate P3 10" and 200 watts (it will handle 400 RMS) this setup sounds great. Sometimes is sounds slow, that is probably a result of the internal volume being so large, but the lows are LOW! Put desturbed in and it ROCKS, Rap sounds just as good, and even Classical. It is a bit too boomy for Country, so I just dail back the input...

I am going to build a smaller version, then a 1.5 cu ft sealed box. I want to hear the differences for myself. Anyone have any input?

Basic rule: Larger box has lower distortion, plays lower. Smaller box plays louder (unless too small) has worse sound quality) but not as deep.

A P3 has a heavy-ass cone (expressed as MM, or "moving mass") of about 228 grams. I like to see around 180 gms. for ported enclosures...Max.

3.9 cubic feet? freeking HUGE for that 12. Bet it played low and clean.

Let us know what you find as you build. Make sure you add braces to keep the box strong.

So externally your box is like ~5cubes? Pics would be nice, other than that I applaud your willingness to build different boxes, rather than just asking around on the net (kinda hard to explain how something sounds).

        My P3 is a 10.

It is really clean, really low, and with only half the power it can handle I think it is quite loud.

I am looking for the brown frequency!

I did not think to look at MM while looking at the subs. I really just went to BrandSmart and bought one there.

        I will grab some pics.

I have an ink pen on my consol, I keep it there, it bounces a little... I don't even have the gain past half way on the amp... and the 3xs seems to kill some of the volume.

I have murdered my trunk space, however, went from three dead bodies down to having to chop one up and put it in a bag ... :)

Bigger boxes let you get away with less power.

My friend with a tahoe, lots of airspace, 4 12w0's, and a 300watt amp will rock your socks off, people dont believe it doesnt have thousands of watts like everyone nowadays.

Yeah, I have two tens in a .83 cubic foot box (face to face mount -- essentially one 10 with lower distortion) due to me wanting to keep 2.5 bodies room in the trunk. I'm having to put the power to them though and missing real low hip-hop with a bench tested 430 watt amp. I put these in place of a 12" (for tighter lower distortion bass for rock) and whenever I put in the occassional hiphop, I go to brace for a boom and it barely even whimpers. Compromises :). I can't believe you put such a huge box for one 10 . Did you do anything for the port (i.e. flare it) to keep down the distortion?

              Ported Box, PICS

I damaged it a little while putting it in. I had to literally ram it in...

              Little sub, big bass

              PPI 404
Front 200watts for two 6.5s and two silk tweeters
              Rear 200watts MONO for sub
              3xs High and low pass...

Messy, but I just put it all in... will rerun wiring next week.

Next box will be smaller, tuned the same, but shaped to fit where the amp and crossover are currently, so I can access my spare... Think FG!

lol, that box is huge. you might be getting good lows with that box, but you are definatly going to lose a lot of power, like everyone has been saying. But the box looks alright, just too big.

i think they are saying you get more sound with less power. I can attest to that.

The lows are great, because of the port tuning, but I lose fast reflex, which I would actually rather have, so the next one will be more in that area...

How come you tuned it so low? There isn't much material out there that even hits 30. What kind of music do you listen to?
I retired my E30 for now...

Experimenting... a lot of rap goes really low, it is great when it hits, rolls, and dips even lower and vibrates the entire car... Cannot hear much outside, however. Benzos are pretty solid

It is loud at any range. the only thing that is not 100% (more like 75%) is like the double bass in some rock music, or fast thumps like that.

I listen to literally everything. From Trance to 80s rock, hip-hop, kill-a-nigga rap, classical, to country and what ever else...

I want to build a smaller version to see if the SPL goes down... effect on distortion, blah blah. The next one will take the place of the amp and 3XS...
