    Subwoofer suggestions

    Hello all,

Looking to get my new set up for my car and was stuck on a sub. Gotten word that ARC AUDIO an JL and a few others are good.

I'm debating between the ARC audio and JL 10in sub

    Either JL 10w6
    Or
    ARC audio 10d4 V3

    Thanks!

Personally, I would not consider either of those.

those are overpriced subs that could be substituted for a much nicer lesser known option.

My personal favorite is arguably the best woofer in the work, the JBL GTi10W

Fast, musical, incredibly powerful motor, just incredible.

and on that note of sanity...the best sounding combo for the lowest cost in an E30 would have to be the Powerbass M1004D in a GAS E3010. Powerbass is the parent company of Image Dynamics, their woofers are designed more for SQ than SPL, but still have plenty of boom for the girlies.

Feed one of these 300 watts (ideally the 5th channel of a decent 4 channel) and its enough for anyone even remotely sane.

You can expect a real world bottom end with awesome depth and clarity, detail better than pretty much any HT sub under $2K, impact far beyond what anyone would expect from a single 10 on 300 watts....and absolutely shocking for a $65 woofer.

I would suggest Sundown too.. Their stuff is quite good for the price. But that JBL is purely awesome...

Here is the crux of what I have found: the interface between the box and the car is far more important than the interface of the box and the woofer.

Not in any way saying that proper box math isn't absolutely crucial, just saying the box connecting to the airspace of the car is much more important to what you actually hear.

I too like the Sundown products, but I wish they had a lighter "MM" or Moving Mass. No 10" woofer with a 2" voice coil should be over 160 grams max (hell, 12's shouldn't be over 160, but good fucking luck on that!) so they tend to be a little less definition, and maybe a little power hungry...but in general, I prefer making a smaller woofer more efficient through acoustics. I like the fast, clean sound, I like the crazy-quick punch and if you do it right, the depth is astounding.

Th goal of our porting isn't more bass, it's a linear impedance curve, which shows a more consistent load to the amp at all frequencies. We can get away with this because we know exactly what environment that box is going in, if you put our box in another car it likely won't perform it's magic.

The definition of the word "System" infers that if you change any one aspect of a system, you will affect all aspects of the system. The environment that a speaker is located in has more to do with what you hear than any other factor, including what sticker is on a woofer.

34 years as a pro making people smile, building killer systems for a living in any car you can think of. That is my history, in a nutshell. BMWs are one of the toughest to make sound good, what we do is IMO, the only logical solution. If you wish to DIY, I highly recommend you copy our designs as closely as possible, including the foam gasket (under the upholstery), it makes an incredible difference.

Most people don't have a tablesaw that will cut a clean, straight 36" cut at an angle: your average Sears saw won't, especially at the .005" tolerance we use. Most people don't have a cabinet stapler, screws are an absolute no-no in building an MDF box, if you think predrilling stops splitting, you are fooling yourself. So, if you have skills, I am happy to offer up some help, but I don't pass out blueprints either, I expect you to do some homework.

I figure a couple hundred to save someone the hassle is fair, all you have to do is wait for it to come in the mail.

All this company has done is taken my thoroughly researched, analyzed and proven concepts, combine it with incredibly precise but low-cost machinery (5 axis CNC is NOT cheap, thus the $200 boxes built by hand) and build unique products designed from the ground up specifically for each BMW chassis.

Trust me, we aren't getting rich here, but it's nice to know we build a damn good product for a very fair price.

                      thanks, guys.
